Load or unload a Component Object Model (COM) add-in

Load or unload a Component Object Model (COM) add-in

If you are a developer, at some point you may need to load or unload a Component Object Model (COM) add-in.

Important: If you are not a developer, you should not have any occasion to use this procedure. If you need installation and removal instructions for a COM add-in, contact the person who provided it.

  1. If the COM Add-Ins command already appears on the Tools menu, skip to step 6.

  2. On the Tools menu, point to Customize, and then click Toolbars.

  3. Click the Commands tab, and then click Tools in the Categories list.

  4. Drag COM Add-Ins from the Commands box to the word Tools on the menu bar. When the Tools menu appears, point to where you want the COM Add-Ins command to appear on the menu, and then release the mouse button.

  5. In the Customize dialog box, click Close.

  6. On the Tools menu, click COM Add-Ins.

  7. In the Add-Ins available list, do one of the following:

    • To load an add-in, select the check box next to the name of the add-in.

If the add-in that you want isn't in the list, click Add, locate the add-in, and then click OK.

    • To unload an add-in from memory but keep its name in the Add-Ins available list, clear the check box next to the name of the add-in.

    • To unload an add-in both from the Add-Ins available list and from memory, click its name, and then click Remove.

Note: Unloading an add-in does not remove the add-in file from your computer.
