Try It! Add and use a Marketing Gadget

Business Contact Manager for Outlook allows you to view up-to-date information about your marketing activities in gadgets.

Before you try it

If you haven't already, you must first switch to the Sample Business database to use the Adventure Works business data for your practice.

Switch to the sample business database

  1. Click the File tab.

  2. Click the Business Contact Manager tab.

  3. Click Manage Databases, and then click Switch to Sample Business.

  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Note: Don't worry, the database that you use for your own business is not affected by your temporary use of the sample business database.

Add a marketing gadget to the Business Contact Manager dashboard

  1. In the Navigation Pane, click Business Contact Manager to display the dashboard.

  2. In the Add Gadgets group, click Marketing, and then click Activity Type Analysis.

Modify the marketing gadget

You can choose the type of data that is displayed by changing the gadget options.

  1. On the Activity Type Analysis gadget, click the Options button   Settings .

  2. In the Activity Type list, click Call List, and then click OK.

    The display changes to show the expected revenue from the call list activities.

Update expected revenue

The gadgets display real-time changes in your data.

The Activity Type Analysis gadget shows that the estimated revenue from potential new customers is about $12,000.

The expected revenue shown in the gadget comes from the estimated value of Opportunities that are associated with the Potential New Customers call list. Records are associated or linked to marketing activities by selecting the name of the marketing activity in the Initiated by field on the record.

Use the following procedure to change the estimated amount of revenue that Adventure Works might get after calling customers as part of the Potential New Customers call list marketing activity.

  1. In the Navigation Pane, under Business Contact Manager, click Sales.

  2. Display the Initiated by field on Opportunity records.

    How?

    1. On the Opportunity tab, double-click a record to open it.

    2. On the Ribbon, the Customize group, click Form Layout.

    3. On the Customize tab, in the Layout group, click Add Fields.

    4. Click Initiated by, and then click Add to Form.

    5. Click Save & Close.

    6. On the Opportunity record, click Save & Close.

  3. On the Opportunities tab, type Bold Bike in the search box, and then click the Search button Search icon .

  4. Double-click the Follow-up with Oscar regarding record to open it.

  5. Under Products and services, click Add.

  6. In the Add Product or Service dialog box, in the Item name box, click Bike wash-dissolver.

  7. In the Quantity box, type 5000, and then click OK.

  8. On the Opportunity record, click Save & Close.

  9. In the Navigation Pane, click Business Contact Manager.

    In the Activity Type Analysis gadget, note that the potential revenue has increased to almost $48,000.
