Set or change the properties of content controls

Each content control in Word, such as drop down lists, check boxes, and Date Pickers, has properties that you can set or change from the Developer tab. For example, for the drop down list control you can change the list format and the number of items it displays.

In Word 2010, 2013, and 2016

  1. Click File > Options > Customize Ribbon.

  2. In the list of tabs under Customize the Ribbon, check the Developer box and then click OK.

  3. In the document, click the content control you want to change.

  4. On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Properties.

  5. Under Content Control Properties, make the changes you want.

In Word 2007

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button Office button image > Word Options > Popular.

  2. Select Show Developer tab in the Ribbon, and then click OK.

  3. On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Design Mode.

  4. In the document, right-click the content control you want to change.

  5. Click Properties, and make the changes you want.
