Review project information without Project 2007

Review project information without Project 2007

Microsoft doesn't have a viewer program that enables you to open a project file on a computer that doesn't have Microsoft Office Project 2007 installed. However, if you don't have Office Project 2007 installed, you can view the information in the file by using a different method.

What do you want to do?

If you don't have Project installed, consider the following options for viewing a project plan:

  • If you have Microsoft Office Project Web Access, you can ask the project manager to publish the project and to give you permission to view the project. Then you can view the project in Office Project Web Access.

  • If you don't have Office Project Web Access, but you can contact the file's creator, that person can distribute the information online.

  • If you don't have Office Project Web Access, and you cannot contact the file's creator, you can obtain a trial version of Microsoft Office Project Standard 2007.

Converters for opening Project 2007 files are provided as part of Microsoft Office Project 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3).

Download Microsoft Office Project 2003 Service Pack 3.

After upgrading to Microsoft Office Project 2003 SP3, you will be able to open a Project 2007 file in Project 2003 as a read-only file.

Note: Converters are not available for opening Project 2007 files from within Microsoft Office Project 2000 or 2002.

Remember that if you save a Project 2007 file to the Microsoft Project 2000 - 2003 MPP format, you can lose data in areas where Project 2007 contains enhanced functionality.

Note, however, that Office Project 2003 doesn't include all the features found in Office Project 2007. Therefore, some information might not be displayed when you open a project created in Office Project 2007 in Office Project 2003.

The person who created the project in Office Project 2007 has several different options for sharing the project information with those who don't have Project installed:

  • Copy a picture of the plan for printing or for viewing in another program or on a Web page.

  • Copy the project data into another 2007 Microsoft Office system program, such as Excel 2007.

  • Copy a picture of the project data for viewing in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft Office Word 2007, or Microsoft Office Visio 2007.

  • Generate basic or visual reports for a project.

If one of these options will provide the information that you need, contact the person who created the project plan.
