Find and delete broken links in the Site Directory

Find and delete broken links in the Site Directory

Over time, your Site Directory might contain broken links because users have deleted sites. As a site administrator, you can easily identify these sites by running the Broken Link Checker.

The Broken Link Checker looks at each site in the Site Directory and stores those that return a 404 or 403 error. (Only http and https links are checked, not file, ftp, or mailto links). Broken links are then listed in a Broken link column in the Site Directory. You can delete the broken links individually or as a group.

  1. On the portal site home page, on the Top Navigation bar, click Sites to open the Site Directory.

  2. On the Top Navigation bar, click Site Actions, and then click Scan for broken links.

  3. Select the sites that you want to scan on the View list, and then click OK.

We recommend that you limit each scan to fewer than 500 sites.

Note: For a large portal site, you can schedule a regular task to check for broken links by using the Site Directory Links Scan in Central Administration.
