Change the password for a Personal Folders file (.pst)

Change the password for a Personal Folders file (.pst)

  1. On the File menu, click Data File Management.

  2. On the Data Files tab, click the Personal Folders file (.pst) for which you want to change the password, and then click Settings.

  3. Click Change Password, and then type both your old and new passwords.

  4. In the Verify password text box, type your new password again, and then click OK.

Note:

  • Use strong passwords that combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Weak passwords don't mix these elements. Strong password: Y6dh!et5. Weak password: House27. Passwords should be 8 or more characters in length. A pass phrase that uses 14 or more characters is better.

It is critical that you remember your password. If you forget your password, Microsoft cannot retrieve it. Store the passwords that you write down in a secure place away from the information that they help protect.

  • Your computer can remember your password so that you don't have to type it in each time that you open the .pst file. If your Microsoft Windows user account is password protected, and no other user has access to your Windows user account, select the Save this password in your password list check box after you verify your new password.
