When you share a document with Edit permission on OneDrive for Business, you are automatically ready to coauthor Office documents. In Word 2016 on the PC or the Mac, document coauthoring happens in real-time. The Share pane displays who has access to the document, and you can see who is making changes with tiny flags that pop up right in the text. If you have Skype for Business installed, you can also see their contact information right from Word. For example, you can quickly IM someone to ask questions or call someone to see if they are done.

Tip: When you coauthor in Word 2016, don't forget to save the document so you are seeing the latest content. This is especially important if you copy the file to another location.

  1. In OneDrive for Business, open the document you want to coauthor.

Collaborate on Word documents with real-time co-authoring

I'm sharing the design document with Zrinka and Brian.

Over the next couple of days, we coauthor the document. This works very smoothly because we're all editing the same document in the cloud.

In the Word document, I can see them making changes with tiny flags that pop up right in the text.

There's more information in the Share Pane that tracks each coauthor and who is editing in real-time.

Because we have Skype for Business, I can also see their contact information right from Word.

I can show more information by clicking the down arrow.

I can IM Zrinka to ask questions, or call Brian to see if he has anything more to add.
