Sometimes you want to leave the page number off of the first page of a document.

For example, when the title is prominent on a page, it's obvious that the page is Page 1, and leaving the page number off looks cleaner. In this case, you would continue numbering with 2 on the second page.

In other situations—for example, if you have a cover page—you might want to leave the page number off the first page, and also to begin numbering the next page, where the content really starts, as Page 1.
