Turn off editing directly in a cell

Turn off editing directly in a cell

Note: This article has done its job, and will be retiring soon. To prevent "Page not found" woes, we're removing links we know about. If you've created links to this page, please remove them, and together we'll keep the web connected.

By default, you can edit the data in a cell by using either the formula bar or by editing the data in the cell itself. To help protect your sheet, you can turn off the ability to edit data directly in the cell, which requires all changes to be made using the formula bar.

  1. On the Excel menu, click Preferences.

  2. Under Authoring, click Edit  Edit Preferences button .

  3. Clear the Double-click allows editing directly in the cell check box.
