Stereotype an element in a uml diagram

Stereotyping is an extensibility mechanism in the Unified Modeling Language (UML). This allows you to extend the vocabulary of UML to create new model elements, based on existing ones.

  1. Open the model diagram in Visio.

  2. Select the element on the diagram that you want to stereotype.

  3. Right-click the element, and on the pop-up menu, select Show Stereotype.

The stereotype appears in guillemets (« ») above the element name.

  4. Type the name of the stereotype that you want to use.

  1. Open the model diagram in Visio.

  2. Double-click the icon in the tree view or the shape in the diagram representing the element you want to stereotype.

  3. In the UML Properties dialog box, for Stereotype, select the stereotype from the dropdown menu, and then click OK.

The stereotype appears in guillemets (« ») above the element name on a shape in a diagram.

Tip: If the stereotype you want isn't listed, on the UML tab on the ribbon, click Stereotypes to define a new stereotype.
