Word 2016 crashes caused by the office compatibility pack workaround

We've received reports of crashes that occur when the Office Compatibility Pack add-in is installed. This add-in lets people using older versions of Office, such as Office 2003, Office 2000, or Office XP open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations that were created in newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

If you're using Office 2010 or later, you can safely uninstall this add-in.

To uninstall the add-in:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. Select Add/Remove Programs.

  3. In the list of currently installed programs, select Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system and then click Remove or Add/Remove. If a dialog box appears, follow the instructions to remove the program.

  4. Click Yes or OK to confirm that you want to remove the program.
