You can have instant messaging (IM) conversations with one or more contacts.
What do you want to do?
Send an instant message to a single contact
To send an instant message, do the following:

Tap Contacts, and from the Lync tab, start typing a person's name in the search box. The results appear below the box.

When you find the contact you're looking for, tap the person's name, and on the Card screen, tap the IM icon, and start typing your message.
Send an instant message to a multiple contacts
To send an instant message to everyone in a distribution group or contact group, do the following:

Tap Contacts, and from the Lync tab in the Contacts list, tap on the icon to the right of the group name.

From the Card screen, tap the IM icon, and start typing your message.
Receive an instant message
When someone sends you an instant message, an instant message alert appears at the top of the screen. Do one of the following:

To accept the invitation, tap the alert.

To ignore the invitation, tap the Close button.
Note: When you are outside of the Lync app and Push Notifications are turned on, then you'll receive Lync notifications on the main screen.
Invite others to a conversation
During an IM conversation, invite someone new by doing the following:

To invite someone to an instant message conversation, from the Conversation screen, tap the Actions icon, and then tap Invite Others.

From the Contacts screen, select or search for the contact you would like to invite to the conversation.
Switch between instant message conversations

To switch between conversations, tap Chats, and from the Chats screen, tap the conversation that you want to reply to.
Escalate an instant message to a call
Escalate an IM conversation to a call by doing the following:

From the instant message conversation, from the Conversation screen, tap the Actions icon, and then tap Call <contact>.
Find a recent or missed conversation
When you miss a conversation, the Chats tab will show the missed conversation icon.

To view a missed or recent conversation, tap Chats. A list of recent and missed conversations is displayed.

Tap the conversation to reply.
End a conversation
When you're done with an IM conversation, do one of the following:

From the Conversation screen, tap the Actions icon, and then tap Delete Conversation.

Tap Chats, tap Edit, and then tap the conversation that you want to delete. Or, tap Select All, and then tap Delete.
