Story with text in overflow area

A text box or AutoShape contains part of a story whose text is in overflow. You will not be able to see this text when you print your publication or publish it to a Web site.

To find and select the item, click the error message in the Design Checker task pane, click the arrow, and then click Go to this Item.

Automatic fix

Place Text on a New Page     If you select this fix, Publisher will guide you through inserting overflow text into an existing empty text box or a new text box on a new page.

Manual fix

To fix this problem manually, you can manually flow the text into another text box, expand the text box to include more text, change the text size, change the margins within the text box or AutoShape, or delete some of the text.

Manually flow the text into another text box

  1. If you want to control where the text will go next, create a new text box.

    How?

    1. On the Objects toolbar, click Text Box Button image .

    2. In your publication, point to where you want one corner of the text to appear, and then drag diagonally until you have the box size that you want.

  2. Click in the text box whose text is in overflow.

  3. On the Connect Text Boxes toolbar, click Create Text Box Link Button image . The pointer changes to a pitcher text box linking pitcher, used to link text boxes. .

  4. Click in the text box that you want as the next in the story.

    This text box is now connected to the first box and any text that was in overflow now appears in this box.

  5. To connect more text boxes to the story, repeat steps 3 and 4.

Expand the text box or AutoShape to include more text

  1. Click the text box or AutoShape to select it.

  2. Position the mouse pointer over one of the handles until you see the Resize pointer move ruler .

  3. Do one of the following:

    • To resize the object proportionally, select a corner handle, hold down SHIFT, and then drag the handle to change the object.

    • To stretch the object, select a top, bottom, or side handle; and then drag the handle to change the object.

Change the text size

  1. Do one of the following:

    • To change the text size for a single word, place the cursor within that word.

    • To change the text size for several words or a few characters, highlight the text to select it.

    • To change the text size for the entire story, place the cursor in the story, and then press CTRL+A.

  2. On the Formatting toolbar, enter a size in the Font Size box Button image .

Note: You can type font sizes that are different from those listed in the Font Size box, to a precision of 0.1 pt. For example, you can type a font size of 9.3 pt.

Change the margins within a text box or AutoShape

  1. Right-click the object, and then click Format Object Type on the shortcut menu.

  2. In the Format Object Type dialog box click the Text Box tab.

  3. Under Text Box Margins, enter the settings for the left, right, top, and bottom margins.

Note: Decrease the margin settings to create more space for your text.

Delete text

  1. Select the text.

  2. Press DELETE.
