Open OneNote for Windows 8 notebooks from multiple OneDrive accounts

Open OneNote for Windows 8 notebooks from multiple OneDrive accounts

With OneNote for Windows 8, you can open notebooks stored in OneDrive.

Note: This topic is about the OneNote app you can get from the Windows 8 Store. If you're using OneNote for Windows 10 or a desktop version of OneNote, such as OneNote 2013 or 2016, you can compare them in this article.

To open a OneDrive-based notebook in OneNote for Windows 8, do the following:

  1. On any page, tap the gripper icon next to Recent Notes in the top left corner.

  2. In the gray pane that appears on the left, tap More….

  3. Tap the name of the notebook you want to open.

To open a OneDrive-based notebook that is not listed, do the following:

  1. Go to the OneDrive home page and sign in with your Microsoft account, if prompted.

  2. Tap and hold on the notebook you want to open and then select Open in OneNote from the context menu.

Although you can sign up for multiple OneDrive accounts, only one can be associated with OneNote. To open a notebook from another account (whether it's another one of your own accounts or someone else's account), make sure it's shared with your primary OneDrive account. As soon as it's been shared, you should see the notebook listed under Files shared with you in your primary OneDrive account. Tap and hold on the notebook and select Open in OneNote from the context menu to open the notebook in OneNote.

If you have multiple versions of OneNote installed on the same computer, notebooks you try to open in this way may not recognize your preferred app version unless you tell Windows your preference.
