Convert a diagram created in a previous Microsoft Office version to a SmartArt graphic or shapes

By using Microsoft Office Excel 2007, you can convert a diagram that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office to a SmartArt graphic or to a group of shapes, or you can keep the diagram as it is.
If you do not convert your existing diagram, you can keep it in your 2007 Microsoft Office system document and continue to edit, resize, and move it by using an earlier version of Microsoft Office. Additionally, any changes in theme colors that you apply to your document by using a 2007 Office release product are also applied to the existing diagram. To use a 2007 Office release program to change a diagram's individual pieces that were created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office, however, you must first convert the diagram.
PowerPoint
By using Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, you can convert a diagram that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office to a SmartArt graphic or to a group of shapes, or you can keep the diagram as it is.

Overview of converting a diagram to a SmartArt graphic
After you convert your existing diagram to a SmartArt graphic, you can use all of the design and formatting tools available, for any SmartArt graphic. The conversion applies an appropriate layout, a SmartArt Style, and colors from the current theme to your existing diagram, all of which you can change.
The conversion may significantly alter the look of your existing diagram, and animations that you added to your existing diagrams before they are converted may not play as expected after they are converted. Also, some layouts for SmartArt graphics have a fixed number of shapes available, so if your existing diagram has more shapes than the number available, some of your data may not appear. For example, in the Venn diagram available in previous versions of Microsoft Office, you can use an unlimited number of top-level shapes, but the Basic Venn SmartArt graphic layout is limited to seven top-level shapes. In this case, the message "Anything above marked with a red X will not appear in this SmartArt graphic and will not be saved" appears at the bottom of the Text pane in your SmartArt graphic. Your data is not lost, and it can be seen if you switch to a different layout, for a SmartArt graphic that does not have a fixed number of shapes.
If you convert your existing diagram to a SmartArt graphic and then open the diagram in an earlier version of Microsoft Office, the diagram is treated as a picture that you cannot edit. If you reopen the converted diagram in a 2007 Office release program, the converted diagram again becomes an editable SmartArt graphic.
Overview of converting a diagram to shapes
Convert your existing diagram to individual shapes if you want the new shapes to look the same as the existing diagram, or if you want to edit the diagram by using either an earlier version of Microsoft Office or the 2007 Office release. The individual shapes are not treated as a diagram, and animations (with the exception of As One Object, which is applied to the entire diagram) are removed when the diagram is converted. However, you can add the animation back after converting the diagram to a group of shapes.
The individual, editable shapes can be formatted by using the options on the Drawing Tools tab, which are available for all shapes. This tab is not part of the SmartArt Tools, and the Layout, Colors, and SmartArt Quick Styles galleries are not available for the individual shapes.
Convert your diagram
If you also want to keep a copy of the document in the original file format, before converting the diagram and everything else in the document, save the document with a different name.

Open the document that contains the existing diagram that you want to convert, and then double-click a shape within the diagram.

To convert your diagram to a SmartArt graphic, click Convert to SmartArt graphic, and then click Convert.

To convert your diagram to individual shapes, click Convert to Shapes, and then click Convert.

Tip: If you change your mind and want to reverse the conversion to a SmartArt graphic or shapes, click Undo

Word
In Office Word 2007, you cannot convert an individual diagram to a group of shapes, but if you chose not to convert, you can still edit, resize, and move the entire diagram (but not individual components of the diagram) in Office Word 2007 as you did in previous versions of Word. To convert a diagram, you must convert the entire document, which converts all of the diagrams in the document to SmartArt graphics.

Open the document that contains the existing diagram that you want to convert.

Click the Microsoft Office Button
, and then click Convert.All of the diagrams in the document are then converted to SmartArt graphics, and the old file is replaced by the new converted file.
