Use a screen reader with the list view in onenote for ios

Read out loud symbol with the label Screen reader content. This topic is about using a screen reader with Office

This article is for people with visual impairments who use a screen reader program with the Office products and is part of the Office Accessibility content set. For more general help, see Microsoft Support home.

Use OneNote for iOS with VoiceOver, the built-in iOS screen reader, to help you work with to-do lists. You can add as many items as you want, check them off when they are done, delete unnecessary items altogether, and make checked items active again if necessary.

  • New Microsoft 365 features are released gradually to Microsoft 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet. To learn how you can get new features faster, join the Office Insider program.

Create a list and add items

You can easily create a list page in your notebook.

  1. Navigate to the section where you want to create the list page.

  2. Swipe right until you hear "New page with list, button" and double-tap the screen.

The new page opens. It starts with one empty, unchecked list item. The focus moves to the list item.

  3. Write text for the list item.

  4. To add another item, tap the lower half of the screen with four fingers. You hear: "Return." Double-tap the screen to create a new empty item.

  5. When you are done adding items, swipe left until you hear "Hide keyboard, button" and double-tap the screen. You hear: "Heading, text field."

  6. Double-tap the screen, and type the title of the list in the text field.

  7. Tap the lower half of the screen with four fingers. You hear: "Done." Double-tap the screen to finish creating the list page.

Tip: To add more items later, when viewing the list, swipe left or right until you hear "Add item, button" and then double-tap the screen. Now you can write the item and add more as described above.

Check off items

When you check off items on the list, they are hidden from view to remove clutter.

  1. Navigate to the list page which has an item you want to check off as done.

  2. Swipe left or right until you find the correct list item.

  3. Swipe left once. You hear: "Unchecked, button."

  4. Double-tap the screen to check off the selected item.

Indent items

You can use indentation to create nested lists to organize your list into main tasks and sub-tasks.

  1. Navigate to the list page which has an item you want to indent.

  2. Swipe left or right until you find the right list item.

  3. Double-tap the screen, then swipe right until you hear: "Indent more, button."

  4. Double-tap the screen to indent the selected item.

  5. To hide the keyboard, swipe right until you hear "Hide keyboard, button" and double-tap the screen.

Delete items

If you realize an item is not needed after all, you can delete it from your list.

  1. Navigate to the list page which has an item you want to delete.

  2. Swipe left or right until you hear "Edit, button" and then double-tap the screen.

  3. Swipe right until you find the right list item.

  4. Double-tap the screen to select the item for deletion. You hear: "Selected."

  5. If you want to delete more items, swipe left or right until you find the next item to be deleted and double-tap the screen again.

  6. When you have selected every item you want to delete, swipe left until you hear "Delete, button" and double-tap the screen.

  7. To exit the editing mode, swipe right until you hear "Done, button" and then double-tap the screen.

Show or hide completed items

You can review the items you have checked off and make them active again if necessary.

  1. Navigate to the list page which has an item you have previously checked off.

  2. Tap the lower half of the screen with four fingers. You hear "Show one completed, button, heading," for example. Double-tap the screen.

  3. Swipe right to go through the items you have checked off.

  4. If you want to uncheck an item and return it to the list, after finding the right item, swipe left once and double-tap the screen.

Tip: To uncheck every item at once, tap the lower half of the screen with four fingers. You hear: "Uncheck all, button." Double-tap the screen.

  5. To hide completed items again, swipe left until you hear "Hide completed, button, heading" and then double-tap the screen.
