Yammer integration with Office 365

Yammer integration with Office 365

Yammer is your company's private social network that enables you to transform team collaboration. Yammer helps you get work done, by providing teams an easy way to self-organize, stay connected on the go, and tap into the network of stakeholders inside and outside your company. Yammer is part of Office 365, and is included in most Office 365 subscriptions.

After significant security and compliance investments, we are proud to announce that Yammer now meets Office 365's industry leading compliance commitments. As a result, all Office 365 tenants with a subscription that includes Yammer, will gain the full benefits of Yammer, without any action required by administrators. The rollout starts now, and you should see this change over the next few months.

Yammer seamless activation in Office 365

Yammer will be seamlessly activated for all Office 365 tenants with a subscription that includes Yammer, in three waves.

  • Wave 1    Includes customers with a business subscription who purchased fewer than 150 licenses that include Yammer and who have zero or one custom domain for their Office 365 tenant. This wave starts February 1, 2016, and will roll out to customers in the subsequent weeks. This does not include customers with an education subscription.

  • Wave 2    Includes customers with a business subscription who purchased fewer than 5000 licenses that include Yammer. This wave starts March 1, 2016, and will roll out to customers in subsequent weeks. This does not include customers with an education subscription.

  • Wave 3    Includes all remaining customers with a business subscription, and all customers with an education subscription. This wave starts April 1, 2016, and will roll out to customers in subsequent weeks.

Also starting February 1, 2016, Yammer will be seamlessly activated on any newly created Office 365 tenant with a subscription that includes Yammer.

  • Not ready?    If you are not ready to fully adopt Yammer in your organization, you can un-assign Yammer user licenses in Office 365 for those who should not access Yammer from Office 365.

  • Don't want to wait?    If you can't wait to take advantage of the power of Yammer in Office 365, you can manually Activate Yammer for your tenant today.

  • Does this apply to me?    If your Office 365 subscription does not include Yammer, you are not affected by this change.

    • If you have a Government subscription, currently you have to acquire Yammer through a separate process; hence, the Yammer seamless activation does not automatically apply to you.

    • If you have an Office 365 Dedicated subscription that falls under the Platform – Legacy Releases or ITAR-support – Legacy Platform categories, currently Yammer may not be part of your subscription; hence, the Yammer seamless activation does not automatically apply to you. Note that if your Office 365 Dedicated subscription falls under the Platform – vNext category, and the subscription includes Yammer, seamless activation does apply to you.

    • If your Yammer network is configured to use Yammer SSO, the seamless activation will still apply to you. After activation, the Yammer tile will be visible on the app launcher in Office 365, and the list of Office 365 Global Administrators will be synchronized to Yammer. However, users will continue login to their Yammer network with their single-sign-on provider - this does not change. Note that Yammer SSO will be deprecated on Dec 1, 2016. You can choose to enforce Office 365 identity and disable Yammer SSO at any time before that.

    • If you are using a Yammer Basic network, and the domain on the Yammer network has been verified on an Office 365 tenant with a subscription that includes Yammer then the seamless activation will apply to you. The activation will connect the existing Yammer Basic network with the Office 365 tenant. After activation, the Yammer tile will be visible on the app launcher in Office 365, and the global administrators in the Office 365 tenant will be synchronized to Yammer. In addition, Yammer users who have logged in with their corresponding Office 365 account will start using Office 365 sign in for Yammer. You can read more about Office 365 sign-in for Yammer.

Note: This seamless activation will either create a new Yammer network or connect to an existing Yammer network that has all or a subset of domains managed on the Office 365 tenant that includes a valid Yammer subscription; the existing Yammer network will be upgraded to Yammer Enterprise if needed. If you had a custom masthead, learn more about Customizing the Office 365 theme. If you have already activated Yammer for your Office 365 tenant manually, seamless activation does not apply to you.

Yammer service availability in Office 365

Office 365 is a compelling suite of productivity software that already includes Yammer with its most popular subscriptions. By seamlessly integrating with Office 365, Yammer is readily available to Office 365 users. For example, they can access Yammer by using the Yammer tile in the Office 365 app launcher, or start a Yammer conversation from other Office 365 apps.

Manage Yammer in Office 365

As Yammer seamlessly integrates with Office 365, Administrators can manage key aspects of the Yammer service from Office 365, including identity, user and license management. For example, administrators can do the following:

  • Set up one single-sign-on solution in Office 365, and enforce it in Yammer.

  • Add or remove users from Office 365, and they get added or removed from Yammer.

  • Assign Yammer licenses to users from Office 365.
