File formats for saving presentations

This topic presents a list of file types that you can use to save your PowerPoint presentations.

Type

What it is

PowerPoint Presentation (.pptx)

The default, XML-based presentation format for PowerPoint for Mac 2011, PowerPoint 2008 for Mac, Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 for Windows, and PowerPoint 2007 for Windows.

PowerPoint 97-2004 Presentation (.ppt)

A presentation format that is compatible with PowerPoint 98 through PowerPoint 2004 for Mac and PowerPoint 97 through PowerPoint 2003 for Windows.

PowerPoint Template (.potx)

Saves the presentation content and formatting as an XML-based template that you can use to start new presentations.  Cannot store VBA macro code.

PowerPoint 97-2004 Template (.pot)

Saves the presentation content and formatting as a template that you can use to start new presentations.  Compatible with PowerPoint 98 through PowerPoint 2004 for Mac and PowerPoint 97 through PowerPoint 2003 for Windows.

Movie (.mov)

Exports the presentation to a movie file that you can play in the QuickTime Player.

PDF

Exports the presentation to a PDF file, which looks the same on Macintosh and Windows computers.

PowerPoint Show (.ppsx)

Saves as an XML-based presentation that automatically opens in slide show view. Compatible with PowerPoint for Mac 2011, PowerPoint 2008 for Mac, PowerPoint 2010 for Windows, and PowerPoint 2007 for Windows.

Tips: 

  • For more information about how to open this file format in earlier versions of PowerPoint, see Sharing documents with other versions of Office.

  • To open this file format in normal view so that you can edit the presentation, open PowerPoint. On the File menu, click Open, and then choose the file.

PowerPoint 97-2004 Show (.pps)

Saves as a presentation that automatically opens in slide show view. Compatible with PowerPoint 98 through PowerPoint 2004 for Mac and PowerPoint 97 through PowerPoint 2003 for Windows.

Tip: To open this file format in normal view so that you can edit the presentation, open PowerPoint. On the File menu, click Open, and then choose the file.

PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Presentation (.pptm)

The XML-based presentation format that preserves Microsoft Visual for Basic Applications (VBA) macro code. VBA macros run in PowerPoint 2011, but they do not run in PowerPoint 2008.

PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Template (.potm)

Saves the presentation content and formatting as an XML-based template that preserves VBA macro code.  VBA macros run in PowerPoint 2011, but they do not run in PowerPoint 2008.

PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Show (.ppsm)

The XML-based presentation format that automatically opens in slide show view and preserves VBA macro code. VBA macros run in PowerPoint 2011, but they do not run in PowerPoint 2008.

Outline / Rich Text Format (.rtf)

Exports the outline text of your presentation to a format that other applications, including compatible Microsoft programs, can read and interpret.

Office Theme (.thmx)

Saves the presentation formatting—such as color scheme, font scheme, backgrounds, and graphics—which complement each other and create a unified look across all slides. Also, preserves one or more slide masters and its corresponding slide layouts.

PowerPoint Add-In (.ppam)

The XML-based add-in format that preserves VBA macro code. VBA macros run in PowerPoint 2011, but they do not run in PowerPoint 2008.

PowerPoint 98 - 2004 Add-In (.ppa)

Saves the add-in in a format that preserves VBA macro code. Compatible with PowerPoint 98 through PowerPoint 2004 for Mac and PowerPoint 97 through PowerPoint 2003 for Windows.

JPEG

Exports each slide to a graphic file that other applications can open.

PNG

Exports each slide to a graphic file that other applications can open.

GIF

Exports each slide to a graphic file that other applications can open.

BMP

Exports each slide to a graphic file that other applications can open.

TIFF

Exports each slide to a graphic file that other applications can open.
