I see "INDEX", "TOC", or other codes instead of my index or table

Note: This article has done its job, and will be retiring soon. To prevent "Page not found" woes, we're removing links we know about. If you've created links to this page, please remove them, and together we'll keep the web connected.

Cause: Word is set to display field codes.

Solution:    Change Word settings to hide field codes.

An index, table of contents, or other table is inserted in your document as a field. If you see something like {INDEX}, {TOC}, or {TOA} instead of the index or table, the field code are being displayed instead of field results.

  1. Select the entire document.

  2. Press OPTION + F9 to show or hide all field codes.

Note: Some keyboards might require you to press FN + OPTION + F9 .
