My characters appear differently in earlier versions of Office

Cause: The characters are unavailable in the font that you are using.

Solution:    Use another character set to type the characters.

If you create a document or an e-mail message in Office for Mac 2011 or Office 2008 for Mac and then view it in Office 2004 for Mac or earlier, some characters might not appear correctly. The following character sets might display characters as underscores (_) or as empty square characters ( Empty square character ): Extended Latin — for example,  One-half character ; Greek; Central European alphabets; and East Asian, including Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean.
