About system models in the UML Model Diagram template

When you open the UML Model Diagram template, you open a modeling environment with the beginnings of a model already in place.

The tree view in the UML Model Explorer represents your overall system model. The diagrams you create are views of the model.

• Represents the system you are currently modeling. To add a model, on the UML menu, click Models.

• Represents one model or abstraction of your system, in this case, a static structure model. To rename any icon in the tree view, click the icon's text once, and then click the text again. Type the new name.

• Represents the top package in the static structure model. A package is a container and this package contains all the static structure model elements.

• Represents a diagram and corresponds to a drawing page of the same name as the icon. To display the drawing page, double-click the icon.

• By default, a new model includes packages that contain the common data types. You can create packages that include your own data types.

• Click a plus (+) sign to display package contents. Click a minus (-) sign to hide package contents.

  If you want to work with the UML Model Diagram template without viewing the system model, hide the UML Model Explorer. To hide or to show the UML Model Explorer, on the UML menu, point to View, and then click Model Explorer.
