Notebook storage options in OneNote for Windows 8
With OneNote for Windows 8, your notebooks live in the cloud — either on OneDrive or on SharePoint.
Note: This topic is about the OneNote app you can get from the Windows 8 Store. If you're using the newer OneNote for Windows 10 app or a desktop version of OneNote, such as OneNote 2013 or 2016, you can learn more about them here.
OneDrive is a free cloud-based storage option that's best for personal use; SharePoint is typically used in larger organizations. New notebooks that you create with OneNote for Windows 8 are automatically stored on OneDrive. If you want to create new notebooks on SharePoint or Office 365, you must first create them with the desktop version of OneNote.
OneNote supports notebooks in the OneNote 2010-2016 format. Notebooks created with older versions of OneNote, such as OneNote 2007 or OneNote 2003, must first be converted to the 2010-2016 file format. You can convert notebooks in the OneNote desktop app.
