Sort, rename, or move photos and files in OneDrive

Sort, rename, or move photos and files in OneDrive

After you upload photos and files to OneDrive, you can rearrange, rename, and move them on the OneDrive website to keep them organized. You might need to sign in with your Microsoft account.

Tip: If you have Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, or if you have the OneDrive desktop app installed on your computer, you can copy, move, and rename files in your OneDrive using File Explorer.

To rearrange files

  1. Browse to the folder with the files you want to rearrange.

  2. Tap or click Sort, and then choose Rearrange.

  3. If prompted, install Microsoft Silverlight.

  4. Arrange the files by dragging them in the order you want them to appear.

  5. Tap or click Save sort order.

Note: Your files will also appear in the custom sort order in the OneDrive mobile app for your phone or tablet. But the order won't apply to your OneDrive files in File Explorer, or in the OneDrive app for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.

To rename a file or folder

  1. Pick the file or folder you want to rename by selecting the check box in the upper-right corner of the item.

  2. Tap or click Rename, and then enter a new name.

Tip: If you have Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, or if you have the OneDrive desktop app installed on your computer, you can rename files in your OneDrive using File Explorer.

To move a file or folder to a different location

  1. Browse to the file or folder that you want to move.

  2. Pick the item you want to move by selecting the check box in the upper-right corner of the item. You can also pick multiple items to move them together.

  3. Tap or click Move to, select the destination folder, and then tap or click Move. If you want to create a new folder to store the item, tap or click New folder.
