I want to stop the Startup Wizard from displaying each time I open Outlook

To stop being prompted to configure Business Contact Manager for Outlook, you can remove it.

Note: We no longer recommend that you change settings in the registry to disable Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

  • Remove Business Contact Manager for Outlook

    • Microsoft Windows XP

      1. Cancel the Startup Wizard, and then close Outlook.

      2. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

      3. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.

      4. In the Currently installed programs and updates list, click Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

      5. Click Remove, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

        Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ) may also appear in the list of Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 components for removal. To free disk space, if other programs are not using it, remove SQL Server 2005 Express.

    • Windows Vista

      1. Cancel the Startup Wizard, and then close Outlook.

      2. On the Start menu, click Control Panel,

      3. In Control Panel, click Programs and Features.

      4. On the Uninstall or change a program page, click Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

      5. Click Uninstall/Change.

      6. Follow the instructions on your screen.

        Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ) may also appear in the list of Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 components for removal. To free disk space, if other programs are not using it, remove SQL Server 2005 Express.

        If the Startup wizard continues to appear after you remove Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007, see the topic, Contact us about Business Contact Manager to use one of the methods to provide more information to Microsoft about the issue.

I want to display the Startup Wizard

Complete the following procedure if you turned off the Startup Wizard by removing Business Contact Manager for Outlook from your profile.

For more information about profiles, see Overview of Outlook e-mail profiles.

  1. Start Outlook.

  2. On the Help menu, click Configure Business Contact Manager.

    This option is available if Business Contact Manager for Outlook is installed on the computer, but is not configured for your profile.

    The Startup wizard is displayed.

  3. Follow the instructions on your screen.

I received a message stating that Business Contact Manager for Outlook installation did not complete because the Primary Interop Assemblies program must be installed.

In some instances, you may find that the Microsoft Office Primary Interop Assemblies program is already installed. In this case, remove the Primary Interop Assemblies program, and then try installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook again.

Windows XP

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.

  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Primary Interop Assemblies, and then click Remove.

  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Windows Vista

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.

  3. Click Microsoft Primary Interop Assemblies, and then click Uninstall.

  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

I received a message that says that Setup failed to install the required component: Microsoft Office Small Business Connectivity Components

Another version of the Small Business Connectivity Components, possibly from a Beta version of either Business Contact Manager for Outlook or Microsoft Office Accounting 2007, is installed on the computer. Remove the Small Business Connectivity Components, and then try again to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

  • Windows XP

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.

    3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Office Small Business Connectivity Components, and then click Remove.

    4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  • Windows Vista

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.

    3. Click Microsoft Office Small Business Connectivity Components, and then click Uninstall.

    4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Setup failed to install the required component. Microsoft SQL Server 2005

This issue sometimes occurs if the drive where Business Contact Manager for Outlook is going to be installed is compressed or encrypted.

Decompress or remove encryption from the folder where Business Contact Manager for Outlook is going to be installed, and they try to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook again.

Disable folder compression

  • Windows XP

    1. Open My Computer.

    2. Double-click a drive or folder.

    3. Right-click the folder where you want to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

      This is usually C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\, where username is the name of the user.

    4. Click Properties.

    5. On the General tab, click Advanced.

    6. Clear the Compress contents to save disk space check box, and then click OK.

  • Windows Vista

    1. Click Start, and then click Computer.

    2. In the Computer window, right-click the drive where you want to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook, and then click Properties.

    3. On the General tab, clear the Compress this drive to save disk space check box, and then click OK.

Decrypt a folder

  • Windows XP or Windows Vista

    1. Click Start, and then click My Computer in Windows XP or Computer in Windows Vista.

    2. Double-click the drive where you want to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

    3. Right-click the folder where you want to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook. and then clickProperties. (The folder is usually C:\Program Files\.)

    4. On the General tab, click Advanced.

    5. Clear the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, and then click OK.

If decompressing the folder or removing encryption do not solve the problem, try posting your question on the Business Contact Manager for Outlook Discussion group (microsoft.public.outlook.bcm).

I received a message stating that Setup encountered a problem.

SQL server setup failed, or a component failed to install. Business Contact Manager for Outlook cannot function without the SQL Server service or the component specified in the message.

In the case that SQL Server setup failed, in the message, if the button is available, please click the Send Error Report button to send Microsoft the log file that was created. The log files help Microsoft to diagnose the problem.

In the case of a missing component, prerelease or older versions of SQL Server components are installed on the computer. The existing version prevents the newer component from being installed. To remove the older component, complete the following procedure.

  • Windows XP

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.

    3. In the Currently installed programs list, click the names of software with SQL in the name or click component named in the message, and then click Remove.

      Repeat the preceding step to remove each item that includes SQL in the name.

    4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  • Windows Vista

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.

    3. Click the names of software with SQL in the name, or click component named in the message, and then click Uninstall.

      Repeat the preceding step to remove each item that includes SQL in the name.

    4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

I received the message stating that Setup failed to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007

Try the following procedures to get more information about your installation issue.

  1. Check the log files

    Please check the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 summary log file to see if an error occurred while installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Check the MBSSetup log files because they may contain more information to help you troubleshoot installation issues with Business Contact Manager for Outlook and other components.

    1. SQL Server log files

      The SQL Server summary log file is located in the following folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt

      If there is an error, the summary log indicates which log file contains additional information about the error. Check the log file that is referred to in the summary log file.

    2. MBSSetup log files

      1. Click Start.

      2. In the Start Search box, type %temp% , and then press ENTER.

      3. In the Temp folder, open each file that begins with MBSsetup by double-clicking it.

      4. Scroll to the bottom of each file to look for any error codes.

        Zero (0) indicates the successful completion of a logged activity.

    3. Contact the Business Contact Manager for Outlook Discussion Group (microsoft.public.outlook.bcm) for help with with your installation issue.

    4. If the log files do not contain any errors or error codes, try to start the SQL service manually. See the section that follows for information about how to start the SQL service.

  2. Start the SQL service manually

    1. Click Start.

    2. Do one of the following:

      • In Windows XP, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.

      • In Windows Vista, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.

    3. Click Services and Applications.

    4. Double-click Services.

    5. In the Services window, click SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ).

    6. In the Status column, verify that the SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) service is not started.

    7. Click Restart the service.

    8. Close the Computer Management window, and then start Outlook.

      If the SQL service does not start, check the event log in Event Viewer for information.

  3. Check the event logs in Event Viewer for information.

    1. Do one of the following:

      • In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.

      • In Windows Vista, click Start, and then click anywhere in the Start Search box.

    2. Type eventvwr, and then press ENTER.

    3. Click Applications and Services Logs

    4. Click a log that contains events, and then in the Actions pane, click Open.

    5. Click any recent warnings or errors to open it.

    6. Click the Details tab to view information about the event.

    7. In the Actions pane, click Copy, and then click Copy Details as Text.

    8. Post the details from the Event Viewer log to the Business Contact Manager for Outlook Discussion Group (microsoft.public.outlook.bcm) for help deciphering the issue.

  4. Remove Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003, and then try installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

    1. Microsoft Windows XP

      1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

      2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.

      3. In the Currently installed programs list, click the software that you want to remove:

        • Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007

        • Microsoft Office Small Business Management Edition 2006 CD2 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager Update which removes Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003

      4. Click Remove, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

        Note: Do not remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ).

      5. Reinstall Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

    2. Windows Vista

      1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel,

      2. In Control Panel, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.

      3. On the Uninstall or change a program page, click the software that you want to remove:

        • Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007

        • Microsoft Office Small Business Management Edition 2006 CD2 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager Update which removes Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003

      4. Click Uninstall/Change.

      5. Follow the instructions on your screen.

        Note: Do not remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ).

      6. Reinstall Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

  5. Remove the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Business Solutions eCRM registry key, and then install Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

    • Important: Editing the registry is an advanced computer task that is usually performed by an administrator.

      1. Do one of the following:

        • Windows XP

          1. Click Start, and then click Run,

          2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

        • Windows Vista

          1. Click Start.

          2. In the Start Search box, type regedit, and then press ENTER.

      2. Double-click the following keys:

        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

        • SOFTWARE

        • Microsoft

      3. Right-click Business Solutions eCRM, and then click Delete.

      4. Restart your computer.

      5. Start Outlook.

  6. Create a new Outlook profile to see if Business Contact Manager for Outlook will start with the new profile.

    For more information about profiles, see Overview of Outlook e-mail profiles.

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Click User Accounts, and then click Mail.

    3. Click Show Profiles.

    4. Click Prompt for a profile to be used.

    5. Click Add.

    6. Type a name for the profile, and then click OK.

    7. Add an e-mail account to use in your profile by following the instructions on your screen.

    8. Restart Outlook, and then click the new profile.

    9. If the Business Contact Manager for Outlook Startup Wizard opens, cancel the wizard, and then close Outlook.

    10. Remove Business Contact Manager for Outlook from the other profile.

      How?

      1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel,

      2. Click User Accounts, and then click Mail.

      3. Click Data Files.

        If there is more than one profile set up on the computer, remove Business Contact Manager from each profile.

      4. Click Business Contact Manager, and then click Remove.

      5. Click Close.

    11. Restart Outlook.

I received a message stating that I do not have a valid license to use Business Contact Manager for Outlook

Where do I find Business Contact Manager for Outlook?

The Outlook menu bar includes Business Contact Manager if it is installed and configured or activated.

Which versions of the 2007 Office System include Business Contact Manager for Outlook?

The installation CD for Business Contact Manager for Outlook is the second CD, CD2. It is included with the following Microsoft Office suites:

  • Microsoft Office Professional 2007

  • Microsoft Office Small Business 2007

  • Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007

Note: Business Contact Manager for Outlook is not included with Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007.

Trial versions of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 and Microsoft Office Small Business 2007, which include Business Contact Manager for Outlook, are available on the Microsoft Office Online Web site. Look for a second link to install a trial version of Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

Note: Outlook 2007 must be installed before installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007. Installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 with Outlook 2003 is not supported.

Configure or activate Business Contact Manager for Outlook

I do not see Configure Business Contact Manager on the Help menu.

Did you verify that Business Contact Manager for Outlook is installed?

If so, a component of Business Contact Manager for Outlook that displays the Configure Business Contact Manager command may have been disabled. To display the command, complete the following procedure:

  1. In Outlook, on the Tools menu, click Trust Center.

  2. Click Add-ins.

  3. In the Manage box, COM Add-ins is displayed. Click Go.

  4. In the Add-Ins available list, select the Business Contact Manager for Outlook check box, and then click OK.

  5. On the Help menu, verify that the Configure Business Contact Manager command is listed.

    Note: Outlook 2007 must be installed before installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007. Installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 with Outlook 2003 is not supported.

Is Business Contact Manager for Outlook installed?

    3. In the Currently installed programs list, check to see whether Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 appears.

    Windows Vista

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.

    3. On the Uninstall or change a program page, check to see whether Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 appears.

  2. If Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 does not appear in the Currently installed programs list, do one of the following:

    1. If you have the Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 CD, install the software from that CD.

    2. If you received Business Contact Manager for Outlook with your computer purchase (and, therefore, do not have a CD) you need to activate Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

      How?

      1. In Outlook, on the Help menu, click Configure Business Contact Manager.

        The Startup wizard is displayed.

      2. Follow the instructions on your screen to activate Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

Business Contact Manager for Outlook is on my Programs menu but it does not show up in Outlook

If you received Business Contact Manager for Outlook with your computer purchase, you need to configure Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

How?

  • In Outlook, on the Help menu, click Configure Business Contact Manager, and then follow the instructions in the Startup wizard.

Business Contact Manager for Outlook views, menus, and toolbars

When I install Business Contact Manager for Outlook, my Outlook menus, commands, and folders change

When you install Business Contact Manager for Outlook, a Business Contact Manager folder is automatically set up for you, with subfolders for your Account,  Business Contact,  Opportunity,  Marketing Campaign, or Business Project records.

A Business Contact Manager menu is added to the menu bar, and Business Contact Manager for Outlook commands are added to the File menu.

A Business Contact Manager toolbar is also added with shortcuts to frequently used folders and tasks.

I can't see the Navigation Pane

To view the Navigation Pane, on the View menu, point to Navigation Pane, and then click Normal or Collapsed.

To close the Navigation Pane, on the View menu, point to Navigation Pane, and then click Off.

I can't see the Business Contact Manager folder

Open the Folder List

  1. On the Go menu, click Folder List.

  2. In the Folder List, look for the Business Contact Manager folder, located under Personal Folders in Outlook.

I can't see the Business Contact Manager toolbar

The Business Contact Manager toolbar is displayed in Outlook when Business Contact Manager for Outlook is installed and activated.

  1. Verify that Business Contact Manager for Outlook is installed.

    How?

    Microsoft Windows XP

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add or Remove Programs again .

    3. In the Currently installed programs list, check to see whether Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 appears.

    Windows Vista

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.

    3. On the Uninstall or change a program page, check to see whether Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 appears.

  2. If Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 does not appear in the Currently installed programs list, do one of the following:

    1. If you have the Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 CD, install it from that CD.

    2. If you received Business Contact Manager for Outlook with your computer purchase (and, therefore, do not have a CD) you need to activate Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

      How?

      • In Outlook, on the Help menu, click Configure Business Contact Manager, and then follow the instructions in the Startup wizard.

Install Business Contact Manager for Outlook in another language

You are installing a version of Business Contact Manager for Outlook in a language that is different than the language selected for the other Office programs

The recommended solution is to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook in the same language as the one selected for the other Office programs.

If this solution is not possible, try the following:

  • If your computer is running Windows XP, log on as an administrator before installing the different language version of Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

  • If your computer is running Windows Vista, when installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook, right-click the program icon or file name, and select Run as administrator.

Installing the program as an administrator may allow you to install a different language version.

Upgrade from Microsoft Office 2003 to the 2007 Office System

Business Contact Manager for Outlook menus and commands disappeared from Outlook after I upgraded Microsoft Office 2003 to the 2007 Office System.

Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 is installed on your computer. It is not compatible with Outlook 2007. You must install Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 to access your Business Contact Manager database.

The Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 Setup wizard removes Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 for you.

The installation CD for Business Contact Manager for Outlook is included with the following Microsoft Office suites:

  • Microsoft Office Professional 2007

  • Microsoft Office Small Business 2007

  • Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007

Note: Please close Outlook before you install Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

The information in your Business Contact Manager database is intact. The next time you start Outlook after installing Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007, the Startup Wizard will move or migrate the older database to the new database.

Upgrade from Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 to Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007

I'm trying to upgrade from Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 to Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 but the setup program stops before it completes.

The setup program for Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 automatically removes Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003, updates your Outlook profile, and then installs Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 unless Outlook is running during setup.

If setup does not complete, try the following and then run setup again:

  • Close Outlook, including any reminders, and also turn off or disconnect any mobile devices that synchronize with Outlook.

  • Remove Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 by using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

    How?

    1. In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

    3. Click Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003, and then click Remove.

  • Important:  The following step requires that you edit the registry which is an advanced computer task. It is recommended that the task is performed by an administrator. For more information, about the registry, see Windows Help and Support.

    Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Business Solutions eCRM registry key.

    How?

    1. In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run,

    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

    3. Double-click the following keys:

      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

      • SOFTWARE

      • Microsoft

    4. Right-click Business Solutions eCRM, and then click Delete.

I upgraded Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 to Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 but I do not see Business Contact Manager for Outlook menus

The setup program did not remove the old Business Contact Manager data file from your Outlook profile so you will need to do it manually. After you open Outlook, you will also need to manually open the Startup Wizard to configure Business Contact Manager.

To remove the data file, complete the following procedure:

Your Business Contact Manager data is intact. Removing the data file does not delete the Business Contact Manager data.

  1. In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel,

  2. Click Mail.

  3. Click Data Files.

    If there is more than one profile set up on the computer, remove Business Contact Manager from each profile.

  4. Click Business Contact Manager, and then click Remove.

  5. Click Close.

To open the Startup Wizard, complete the following procedure:

  1. Start Outlook.

  2. On the Help menu, click Configure Business Contact Manager.

    The Startup wizard is displayed.

  3. Follow the instructions on your screen.

I see the message, Database migration was unsuccessful after selecting an existing database

Try again to use the database, by clicking Select an existing database in the Startup Wizard.

If you continue to receive the Database migration was unsuccessful message, try the following:

  1. Uninstall Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

    How?

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.

    3. Click Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007, and then click Remove.

  2. Reinstall Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003.

  3. In the Startup Wizard, click Select a database, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

  4. Export all of the information in the Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 database.

    How?

    1. On the File menu, point to Import and Export, and then click Business Contact Manager for Outlook..

    2. Click Export a file.

    3. Click Business Contact Manager data (.bcm), and then follow the instructions on your screen.

      Note: Do not remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ) if it is included in the list of Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 components for removal.

  5. Install Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

  6. In the Startup Wizard, click Create a new database, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

  7. On the File menu, point to Import and Export, and then click Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

  8. Click Import a file.

  9. Click Business Contact Manager data (.bcm), and then follow the instructions on your screen.

Remove Business Contact Manager for Outlook

I want to remove, uninstall or disable Business Contact Manager for Outlook

You can disable Business Contact Manager for Outlook by uninstalling it.

Complete one of the following procedures:

  • Microsoft Windows XP

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.

    3. In the Currently installed programs and updates list, click Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

    4. Click Remove, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel,

    2. In Control Panel, click Programs and Features.

    3. On the Uninstall or change a program page, click Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

    4. Click Uninstall/Change.

    5. Follow the instructions on your screen.

    3. In the Currently installed programs and updates list, click the software that you want to remove:

      • Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007

      • Microsoft Office Small Business Management Edition 2006 CD2 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager Update which removes Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003

    4. Click Remove, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

      Note: Do not remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ) if it is included in the list of Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 components for removal.

    5. Reinstall Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

  • Windows Vista

In a few cases, Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 will not reinstall. In this case, try removing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Business Solutions eCRM registry key by completing the following procedure. Restart your computer, and then restart Outlook.

    • Windows XP

      1. Click Start, and then click Run,

      2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

      3. Double-click the following keys:

        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

        • SOFTWARE

        • Microsoft

      4. Right-click Business Solutions eCRM, and then click Delete.

      5. Restart your computer.

      6. Start Outlook.

    • Windows Vista

      1. Click Start.

      2. In the Start Search box, type regedit.

      3. Double-click the following keys:

        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

        • SOFTWARE

        • Microsoft

      4. Right-click Business Solutions eCRM, and then click Delete.

      5. Restart your computer.

      6. Start Outlook.
