Use Office 365 Video for iPhone

Office 365 Video is a portal in Office 365 that provides a streaming video service for your organization. It's a great place to upload, share, and view videos internally—for example, videos of executive communications or recordings of meetings, presentations, or training sessions. For more information, see Meet Office 365 Video.

Office 365 Video for iPhone provides mobile access to the channels and videos that are in your Office 365 Video portal. You can use the iPhone app to upload and watch videos, for example. The app is available for iOS 7 or later, and you can download it for free from the App Store. The iPhone app also works on iPad, but it is not designed for viewing on that device.

What you can and can't do with Office 365 Video for iPhone

Office 365 Video for iPhone provides a subset of the full functionality that is available when someone with the appropriate permissions accesses the Office 365 Video portal in a web browser in Office 365. This article describes things that you can do with Office 365 Video for iPhone:

What you can't do with Office 365 Video for iPhone

You can't perform any of the following Office 365 Video operations by using Office 365 Video for iPhone:

  • Create a channel

  • Delete a channel

  • Change channel permissions (channel edit permission and channel view permission)

  • Change admin permissions (to specify video admins or channel admins)

  • Spotlight videos for a channel

  • Spotlight channels or videos for the Home page of the Office 365 Video portal

These operations can be performed only by someone with the appropriate permissions in the Office 365 Video portal in a web browser in Office 365.

Signing in and out of Office 365 Video for iPhone

You can sign in to Office 365 Video for iPhone only if both of the following are true:

  • Your organization has set up an Office 365 Video portal in Office 365.

  • Your organization has assigned you a user license for one of the Office 365 subscription plans for which Office 365 Video is available:

    • Office 365 Enterprise E1

    • Office 365 Enterprise E2

    • Office 365 Enterprise E3

    • Office 365 Enterprise E4

    • Office 365 Enterprise A2

    • Office 365 Enterprise A3

  • Office 365 Enterprise A4

If you don't know whether you have a user license for one of the Office 365 subscription plans listed above, contact your IT department.

To sign in to Office 365 Video for iPhone

  1. If the O365 Video app isn't already downloaded to the iPhone, download it from the App Store.

  2. On the iPhone, tap the O365 Video app.

  3. In the user name field, enter your work or school account in the format someone@example.com.

  4. In the password field, enter your password.

To sign out of Office 365 Video for iPhone

  1. On the Home page of the app, tap the Options icon Options icon in Office 365 Video for iPhone .

  2. At the upper right, tap the Settings icon Settings: update your profile, install software and connect it to the cloud .

  3. Near the bottom of the Settings page, tap sign out.

Viewing the Home page

The Home page contains the following:

  • Spotlight section   . This section contains thumbnails and titles of videos that a video admin has chosen to promote. A video admin can spotlight up to five videos and three channels in the Spotlight section. To see all of the videos in the Spotlight section, touch the section and swipe to the right.

  • Popular section   . This section contains thumbnails and titles of the videos that have been viewed most frequently in the past two weeks. At the top right in the Popular section, you can tap See All to see a list of all videos in the Office 365 Video portal ordered by popularity, with the most popular videos at the top of the list.

  • Options icon    Options icon in Office 365 Video for iPhone . Tap this icon to view a list of channels that are in your organization's Office 365 Video portal.

Searching for a video

You can search for and find any video that is in a channel that you have permission to view.

To search for a video

  1. Do one of the following on the Home page:

    • Touch anywhere near the top of the page and swipe to the right.

    • Tap the Options icon Options icon in Office 365 Video for iPhone .

  2. At the top of the page that appears, tap the Search icon Search .

  3. Enter a search query in the search all videos text box.

  4. Below the keypad, tap Search.

Going to a particular channel

You can view a list of channels and go to a channel to view the videos that are in it or to upload a video to it. To be able to view a channel and the videos that are in it, you have to have view permission for the channel. By default, everyone in your organization has view permission for a channel when the channel is created.

It is not possible to change channel view permissions from Office 365 Video for iPhone; those permissions can be changed only when someone with the appropriate permissions goes to the Office 365 Video portal in a web browser in Office 365. To go to a particular channel

  1. Do one of the following on the Home page:

    • Touch anywhere near the top of the page and swipe to the right.

    • Tap the Options icon Options icon in Office 365 Video for iPhone .

  2. Scroll through the list of channels to find the one that you are looking for.

    When you are viewing the list of channels, you can scroll to the top of the list to get to links to go to the Home page or the Popular Videos page.

  3. Tap the channel that you want to view.

    To return to the list of channels when you are viewing a particular channel, tap the Options icon Options icon in Office 365 Video for iPhone .

Uploading videos from an iPhone to Office 365 Video

To upload a video, you upload it to a specific channel. You can set Office 365 Video for iPhone to upload videos using wi-fi only. For information about video formats that are compatible with Office 365 Video, see Video formats that work in Office 365 Video.

You have to have edit permission for a channel to be able to upload videos to it. It is not possible to change channel permissions (edit permission and view permission) by using Office 365 Video for iPhone; they can be changed only when someone with the appropriate permissions goes to the Office 365 Video portal in a web browser in Office 365. The maximum file size that you can upload is 2GB. (The same upper limit applies to uploading files to SharePoint Online.) When you upload a video, the original file is stored in SharePoint Online and it counts against your organization's storage quota. For more information, see Manage site collection storage limits.

To set Office 365 Video for iPhone to upload videos using wi-fi only

  1. On the Home page, tap the Options icon Options icon in Office 365 Video for iPhone .

  2. At the upper right, tap the Settings icon Settings: update your profile, install software and connect it to the cloud .

  3. Near the bottom of the Settings page, next to Upload video on Wi-Fi only, touch the on/off toggle switch and swipe the button to the right. When the button is at the right in the switch, the switch is in the On position (with a green background), so that Office 365 Video for iPhone will use only wi-fi to upload videos.

  4. To leave the Settings page, tap Done at the upper right of the page.

To upload an existing video from an iPhone to Office 365 Video

  1. Go to the channel to which you want to upload a video. For more information, see Going to a particular channel earlier in this article.

  2. On the upper right corner of the page, tap the Upload Video (plus sign) icon Add-video icon in Office 365 Video for iPhone .

  3. At the bottom of the page, tap Choose existing. The iPhone Photos app appears.

  4. In the Photos app, tap Videos, and then tap the video that you want to upload.

  5. Tap Choose.

  6. In the Tap to add a title field, enter a title for the video.

  7. (Optional) In the Tap to add a description field, specify a description for the video.

Note: As is the case for any file upload, there are many factors that can affect the time it takes to upload a video, such as video size and network bandwidth.

For search discoverability, it can be useful to be consistent about how you title and describe videos. This information can make it easier for everyone to search for the videos later, especially when there are a lot of videos in Office 365 Video. It also provides additional context for the video in Office Delve and the Office Graph.

Viewing the videos that you uploaded to a channel

Office 365 Video for iPhone provides a separate view called My Videos for the videos that you have uploaded to any particular channel.

To view the videos that you uploaded to a channel

  1. Go to a channel to which you've uploaded one or more videos. For more information, see Going to a particular channel earlier in this article.

  2. At the top of the list of videos in the channel, tap All Videos.

  3. Tap My Videos.

Checking whether a video that you uploaded is ready to play

After you upload a video, it takes time to process it for streaming playback and index it for search before it is ready to play. The video will first be visible and playable in your My Videos section in the channel. The video will be visible and playable by others elsewhere on the portal a little later. Only people who have permission to view videos in that channel can view videos that you have uploaded to the channel.

To check whether a video that you uploaded is ready to play

  1. Follow the steps in the previous section, Viewing the videos that you have uploaded to a channel.

  2. In My Videos, find the thumbnail of the video that you want to check.

While a video is being processed, an empty thumbnail for the video appears in My Videos with a message that indicates the video is being processed. When the video is ready to play, a thumbnail containing a graphic for the video appears.

Editing the title or description for a video that you uploaded

At any time, you can edit the title or description for a video that you uploaded.

To edit the title or description for a video that you uploaded

  1. Go to the channel to which you uploaded the video. For more information, see Going to a particular channel earlier in this article.

  2. Tap the thumbnail of the video for which you want to edit the title or description. The video player page appears.

  3. On the upper right corner of the video player page, tap Edit.

  4. Tap the title field (immediately below the video player) to edit the video title.

  5. Tap the description field (immediately below the title field) to edit the video description.

  6. At the bottom of the page, tap Done.

  7. On the upper right of the page, tap Done.

Deleting a video that you uploaded

When you delete a video, it frees up space toward your organization's SharePoint Online storage quota. To upload a video to a channel, you have to have edit permission for the channel. To delete a video that you uploaded, you must still have edit permission for that channel. For more information, see Changing channel permissions in Create and manage a channel in Office 365 Video.

Warning: After you delete a video, you can't recover it, though you can always upload it again if you like.

To delete a video that you uploaded

  1. Go to the channel to which you uploaded the video.

  2. Tap the thumbnail of the video that you want to delete. The video player page appears.

  3. On the upper right corner of the video player page, tap Edit.

  4. At the bottom of the page, tap delete.

  5. In the Delete this Video? window, tap Delete Video.

  6. At the bottom of the page, tap Done.

  7. On the upper right of the page, tap Done.
