Promote a row to column headers (Power Query)

When a table is created, Power Query assumes that all data belongs in table rows. However, a data source might have a first row that contains column names. To make sense of the data, you might need to promote the first table row to column headers.

Promote a row to column headers

Using the Query Editor ribbon

1. In the Query Editor ribbon, click Use First Row As Headers.

Using the preview grid table icon ( )

1. Right-click the table icon ( ) in the upper left corner of the table.

To Promote a row to column headers

1. Select Use First Row As Headers.

Note: The Query Editor only appears when you load, edit, or create a new query using Power Query. The following video shows the Query Editor window appearing after editing a query from an Excel workbook. To view the Query Editor without loading or editing an existing workbook query, from the Get External Data section in the Power Query ribbon tab, select From Other Sources > Blank Query.
