Power View sheets, Data Models, and Power Pivot add-in not supported in Excel 2013 RT

Power View sheets, Data Models, and Power Pivot add-in not supported in Excel 2013 RT

Important:  Power View and Power Pivot are available in the Office Professional Plus and Office 365 Professional Plus editions, and in the standalone edition of Excel 2013. Read Excel 2010 workbooks with Power Pivot don't work in some versions of Excel 2013. Want to see what version of Office you're using?

Excel 2013 RT is missing a few features that Excel 2013 provides. If you're sharing workbooks created in Excel 2013 on Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, and the workbooks contain Power View sheets or a Data Model, you might run into application compatibility issues. Here are details about what's available and unavailable, and the errors you'll encounter.

PivotTables available

Excel 2013 RT supports PivotTables. Thus, you can connect to an Analysis Services data source, either multi-dimensional or tabular, and create a PivotTable to analyze external data.

Power View sheets

Power View sheets are an interactive data visualization experience that you can add to an Excel 2013 workbook. If you open a workbook containing a Power View sheet in Excel 2013 RT, the Power View sheet still shows up in the workbook, but instead of interactive data it shows a placeholder image.

Data Models

The Data Model is the embedded, related tabular data in Excel that you use with PivotTables, PivotCharts, and Power View reports. The Data Model is created in the background when you import multiple related tables from a relational data source, or when you create relationships among individual tables in a workbook. On Office RT, data models are not supported.

If you filter data that originates from an embedded data model, you'll see these errors:

"Unsupported Features: This file contains unsupported features that may not work as expected. Learn more."

"We cannot run one or more of the following features in this version of Office:

  • VBA Project

  • ActiveX Controls"

Power Pivot Add-in

In Excel 2013, the Power Pivot add-in is used for data model management, including viewing its contents and augmenting it with KPIs, hierarchies, and calculations. The Power Pivot add-in for Excel 2013 is available in the Office Professional Plus and Office 365 Professional Plus editions, and in the standalone edition of Excel 2013 on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
