Copying items in a 2007 custom Forms tool

Copying items in a 2007 custom Forms tool

You can copy items in the data view of a 2007 custom Forms tool using standard Copy and Paste commands. This is generally useful when you want to add many items that contain similar information. For example, you can add one item, fill out all fields, use Copy and Paste to duplicate the item several times, and then open and edit fields in each duplicate item.

  1. Click the item you want to copy.

  2. On the Home tab, click Copy.

  3. Go to the custom tool in which you want to paste the item.

  4. On the Home tab, click Paste.

Note the following behavior rules:

  • You can copy only one item at a time.

  • Response items do NOT get copied with their parent items.

  • A pasted response item gets placed as a child of the currently selected item.

  • You can copy items from one custom tool to another only if the source and target custom tools are compatible. The target tool is incompatible if any of the following is true:

    • The target tool is an earlier tool version as reported in the tool properties. For example, you cannot copy items from a 5.xxx tool to a 4.xxx tool.

    • The items copied from the source tool are derived from a form template not found in the target tool. For example, you cannot copy items from a Discussion tool to an Issue Tracking tool, or vice versa. In some cases, tools that appear to be similar may contain items derived from different form templates.

    • The target tool was created using a different custom tool designer, such as Forms or InfoPath Forms. The base custom tool is reported on the General tab in tool properties.
