Important differences between Office Groove 2007 and SharePoint Workspace 2010

If you have upgraded to SharePoint Workspace 2010 from Office Groove 2007, read the table in this Help article to learn about important feature differences in the new release.

Access to content stored in Groove workspaces	To access workspace content, you were required to open workspaces in the Groove Workspace Explorer window. There was no access to this content directly in your file system.	Content stored in 2010 Documents tools can now be accessed directly in your file system. For more information, see Accessing workspace data from your file system.
Alerts on contacts	You could set alerts on selected contacts or workspace members in order to be notified about online or idle status changes. You set these alerts the same way you did for workspaces and tools.	The Office Groove 2007 feature is removed. However, if you are running Microsoft Office Communicator, you can tag contacts to receive status change alerts.
Calendar and Meetings tools	Separate Calendar and Meetings tools were available for adding to Groove workspaces. There was no integration between these tools.	A new Calendar tool that combines calendar and meetings features can be added to 2010 workspaces. You can continue to add 2007 Calendar and Meetings tools to existing or new 2007 Workspaces.
Custom Forms tools	You could create custom workspace tools using either the Forms tool, in which all design work occurred in the tool's designer, or the InfoPath Forms tool, in which you imported forms templates designed in Microsoft InfoPath 2007 and then added design features such as views and sorts in the tool's designer.	You create custom workspace tools using the new Lists tools, which is seamlessly integrated with Microsoft Office InfoPath 2010. Additionally, the designer component is no longer available in any existing 2007 Forms or 2007 InfoPath Forms tool.
Messaging	The primary messaging system was a dedicated Groove component. The available Office Communicator integration was based on the Windows API.	Microsoft Office-based integration of Communicator provides a richer and more consistent feature set. Additionally, if installed and running on the user's system, Communicator is the default messaging system, and presence icons are derived from Communicator. If Communicator is not running, then you see the original Groove messaging features. For more information, see Starting an Office Communicator conversation.
Multiple identities	Unless restricted by policy you could create multiple identities in your account. The purpose of the multiple identities feature was to enable you to assume different and unique personas for interacting with different sets of people.	If you want to use multiple personas, you must create additional user accounts. However, accounts in which multiple identities were previously created can continue to use all identities.
Permissions	Groove workspace managers could change permissions assigned to member roles.	Permissions assigned to member roles in SharePoint Workspace 2010. Workspaces are defined according to default settings and cannot be changed. However, workspace managers can still change permissions assigned to roles in Groove 2007 workspaces.
Search	Search features were available within specific workspace tools, such as custom Forms tools or Notepad, and in the Message History.	In addition to tool-specific Search features, you can now use Windows Search 4.0 to find content in a workspace or across workspaces. Security	Your account was protected via optional password login or smart card. These security features provided on-disk encryption of all data.	Your account is protected via Microsoft's Bitlocker protection model. As a result, account access requires only Windows log-in credentials. This security model enhances performance and allows Windows Search access to 2010 workspace content.
SharePoint integration	To work with SharePoint content, you added a SharePoint Files tool to a Groove workspace.	You can now create a personal, synchronized copy of a SharePoint site, called a SharePoint workspace, which allows you to access your SharePoint site content while offline. Additionally, SharePoint Files tools are still supported in Groove 2007 workspaces.
