Rename a column (Power Query)

To rename a Power Query data source column, use the Query Editor to change its name. The new column name is used in the query.

Rename a column

There are a couple ways (at least) to rename a column. The following two approaches achieve the same result of changing the name of the column:

• In the Query Editor, double-click on a column, and enter the new name.

• In the Query Editor, you can also right-click on the column you want to rename, and select Rename from the menu that appears.

The following quick video shows both approaches: the first column is renamed by double-clicking the column name, the second is renamed by right-clicking then typing the new column name.

Note: The Query Editor only appears when you load, edit, or create a new query using Power Query. The following video shows the Query Editor window appearing after editing a query from an Excel workbook. To view the Query Editor without loading or editing an existing workbook query, from the Get External Data section in the Power Query ribbon tab, select From Other Sources > Blank Query.
