Insert a symbol

Insert a symbol

By default, the Symbol dialog box shows emoji at first when it's opened. But you can expand it to see other character sets: Scroll to the top and click the toggle button in the right corner:

The Symbol dialog can be toggled to a larger view that shows several types of characters, not just emojis
The Symbol dialog box shows emoji by default.
The expanded Character dialog shows fun symbols and also technical characters such as math and latin symbols
The expanded dialog box shows several character sets to choose from.
Which Office program are you using?

Word

Do any of the following:

Insert symbol

  1. On the Insert menu, click Advanced Symbol, and then click the Symbols tab.

  2. Click the symbol that you want.

Insert special characters

  1. On the Insert menu, click Advanced Symbol, and then click the Special Characters tab.

  2. Click the character that you want.

  2. On the Standard toolbar, click Show or hide the Media Browser  Media Browser button .

  3. Click the Symbols tab  Symbols, Media Browser , and then click the symbol that you want to insert into the document.

Find more symbols to insert

If you do not find the symbol that you are looking for in the Symbol Browser, you can look in the Symbol dialog box.

  1. On the Insert menu, point to Symbol, click Advanced Symbol, and then click the Symbols tab.

  2. Click the symbol that you want.

Insert special characters

  1. On the Insert menu, point to Symbol, click Advanced Symbol, and then click the Special Characters tab.

  2. Click the character that you want.

  1. On the Edit menu, click Special Characters.

  2. In the Characters dialog box, on the View pop-up menu, click All Characters.

  3. Click the By Category tab, click the arrow next to Symbols, and then click the symbol category that you want.

  4. Click the symbol that you want to insert, and then click Insert.
