Learn how to navigate in the people app using accessible features

Read out loud symbol with the label Screen reader content. This topic is about using a screen reader with Office

This article is for people with visual impairments who use a screen reader program with the Office products and is part of the Office Accessibility content set. For more general help, see Office Support home.

Use the People app in Outlook on the web with your keyboard and a screen reader to explore and navigate the app main views and elements, and to move between views and functions. We have tested it with Narrator, JAWS, and NVDA, but it might work with other screen readers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

The People app is your address book where you can manage your contacts' information. The People app is a web-based application that you use in a web browser.

Notes:

  • New Microsoft 365 features are released gradually to Microsoft 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet. To learn how you can get new features faster, join the Office Insider program.

  • To learn more about screen readers, go to How screen readers work with Microsoft Office.

  • When you use the People app, we recommend that you use Microsoft Edge as your web browser. Because the People app runs in your web browser, the keyboard shortcuts are different from those in a desktop program. For example, you'll use Ctrl+F6 instead of F6 for jumping in and out of the commands. Also, common shortcuts like F1 (Help) and Ctrl+O (Open) apply to the web browser – not the People app.

When you open the People app, you land on the navigation pane on the left of the screen. The pane lists your contacts, groups, and directories. The focus is on the Contacts category. To browse and select categories in the navigation pane, use the Up or Down arrow key. When you select an item in the navigation pane, the contents of the main pane change depending your selection.

At the top of the navigation pane, you'll find buttons for toggling the navigation pane on and off and for creating a new contact or contact list. To move between these buttons, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab.

Below the toolbar, the main pane is divided into two areas: the list view and the details view.

  • On the left, the list view shows all items in the category you selected in the navigation pane, for example, all your contacts or contact lists. To browse the items on the list, press the Tab key until you reach the first item, and then use the Down or Up arrow key.

  • The details view on the right displays the details of the item selected in the list view. To move in the details view, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab.

To navigate the toolbar, press the Tab key once, and then use the Right or Left arrow key.
