The EC Meter project can be found in the Measuring Water Quality to Understand Human Impact lesson plan. This lesson plan explores electrical conductivity and the impact of pollutants in local water supplies. When building the EC meter, students may run into some problems. Here are some troubleshooting tips to help them get unstuck:
Problem - When I place my straw in my solution, I get no readings or an inconsistent reading.
Solution - Make sure you have a calibration factor entered correctly into the workbook.
-
Check to make sure your breadboard wires are not loose and that your alligator clips have a good connection.
-
Make sure the temperature entered in the workbook is the same as the temperature of the physical solution.
-
Make sure that your sensor ends are sealed with glue.
-
Make sure that your microcontroller is flashed using the correct code.
-
Make sure that you're using the correct Excel Workbook—each Hacking STEM project comes with its own customized workbook.
