Add comments to an Excel Online worksheet using a screen reader

Using your keyboard and a screen reader, you can add comments to give feedback in an Excel Online worksheet. You start by opening the Comments pane, where you can enter your comments.

Tip: If the Comments pane is already open, skip down to Go to the Comments Pane to add, edit, or delete a comment.

Open the Comments pane to add a comment

  1. Not in Excel Online? Go to Office Online and press Tab until you get to Excel Online, then press Enter.

    Note: To use Excel Onlineyou have to sign in to your Microsoft account. If you don't have an account yet, here's where you can sign up for a Microsoft account.

  2. In Excel Online, make sure you're in Editing view.

    Notes: 

    • If you're not in Editing view, press the Tab key until you reach the app launcher. You'll hear, "Open the app launcher to access your apps."

    • Press Tab again until you reach the Edit Workbook button on the ribbon, and press Enter.

    • Use the Down Arrow to go to Edit in Excel Online and press Enter.

  3. In the worksheet, pick the cell where you want the comment to appear.

  4. Press Ctrl+F6 until you hear "Selected" and a description of the current ribbon tab, such as "Home tab item." You'll need to get to the Review tab, so press Tab until you hear "Review tab item."

  5. Press Enter.

  6. Press Tab to go to New Comment, then press Enter. This opens the Comments pane.

  7. Type your comment. You can press Enter to add new lines.

  8. Press Tab to move to the Post button, then press Enter to save your comment.

    Note: An indicator appears in any cell that has a comment associated with it. When a cell with a comment is selected, it has a small balloon icon next to it that says "Show Comment."

Go to the Comments pane to add, edit, or delete a comment

  1. In Editing view, press Ctrl+F6 until you get to the open New Comment link in the Comments pane.

  2. Press Enter and type your comment.

  3. Press Tab to move to the Post button, then press Enter to save your comment.

Tip: To edit or delete existing comments, press Tab to cycle through them till you get to the comment you want to change or delete. Then type the text you want or press Tab to go to the Delete button in the comment.
