Add or edit a legend shape

You can configure the display of information in a Legend shape in two ways. You can edit and format text directly in the Legend shape, and you can use the Configure Legend dialog box to specify which symbols and information appear in the Legend.

Note: The Legend shape appears in the Brainstorming Diagram, Network Diagram, and Building Plan templates, but you can use it in any Microsoft Office Visio drawing.

Add or edit text in the legend

  • In the Legend shape, double-click Title or Subtitle and then type the text you want.

Alternatively, right-click Title or Subtitle and select Edit Text. Then type the text you want.

Note: If the Legend shape is already selected, just click once and type.

Format text in the legend

  • Select the area you want to format, and then right-click. The Formatting box appears along with the menu. Select any of the options in the Formatting box.

Modify the legend appearance using the Configure Legend dialog box

  1. Right-click the Legend shape, and then click Configure Legend.

  2. In the Configure Legend dialog box, do any of the following:

    • Show or hide particular legend symbols in the Legend shape using the check boxes under Visible.

    • Show or hide the subtitle, column names, or quantity using the check boxes at the bottom of the dialog box.

    • Change the order of legend symbols using the Move Up and Move Down buttons.

Note: Legend symbols must be set to Visible in the Configure Legend dialog box for changes resulting from Move Up or Move Down to persist.

  3. Click OK.

Note: You can resize the Legend shape horizontally by dragging a side selection handle.
