Administrator settings for the recording features in powerpoint

There are three group policy settings that an administrator can set that are related to the Recording features introduced in PowerPoint 2016.

What administrators can do

  • Administrators can turn on the Recording tab for all users via group policy.

  • Administrators can set audio and/or video recording to be turned off by default

  • Administrators can enable Apps for Office (including quiz apps)

Where to get Group Policy files

You can download Group Policy Administrative Template files from The Microsoft Download Center.

Turn on the Recording tab

If you want to have the Recording tab appear by default, you can enable the "Turn on recording ribbon tab" Group Policy setting. You can find this policy setting under User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Microsoft PowerPoint 2016\Disable Items in User Interface\Predefined.

Turn off microphone recording by default

You can enable the "Turn off microphone recording by default when recording a slide show" Group Policy setting. You can find this policy setting under User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Microsoft PowerPoint 2016.

Turn off camera recording by default

You can enable the "Turn off camera recording by default when recording a slide show" Group Policy setting. You can find this policy setting under User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Microsoft PowerPoint 2016.

Manage apps for Office

You can manage and enforce settings for "apps for Office" (such as quizzes and polls) by using Group Policy settings. See "Using Group Policy to manage how users can install and use apps for Office" in the article, Overview of apps for Office.
