Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Services

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 has multiple services, specific to the server roles. Changes to some settings require stopping, starting, or restarting one or more services. The following table lists the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 services and describes the requirements for stopping, starting, and restarting the services.

Note: In addition to the service restart requirements described in the following table, it is also recommended that you stop the appropriate services before deactivating a server role, to help ensure that no users remain connected to the server.

Requirements for Stopping, Starting, and Restarting Service

Office Communications Server Front End service

When using dbimpexp.exe to import or export user information, stop the service to prevent users from logging on to the Real Time Collaboration (RTC) database during the export process.

Restart the service after using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to change any of the following:

  • Certificate for this server.

  • The following pool-level Front End Properties settings on the Archiving tab: Activate content archiving, Shut down server if archiving fails (including message encryption failure), or the settings of the associated Office Communications Server (including the Archiving message queue path).

Restart the service after changing the following Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

  • MSFT_SIPLogSetting: Enabled, Critical, StopOnEncryptionInitFailures, EnableCDR, TimeToBeReceived, or TimeToReachQueue

  • MSFT_SIPLogOptions: Queue Path; ArchivingBEToken, or CDRBEToken

Office Communications Server IM Conferencing service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change the certificate for this server.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

Office Communications Server Telephony Conferencing service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change the certificate for this server.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

Office Communications Server Web Conferencing service

Stop the service before configuring log meeting content for compliance and before creating and configuring file folders and file shares for meeting content and metadata, and start the servers when finished.

Restart the service after using the MMC to change the certificate for this server.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

  • MSFT_SIPDataMCUCapabilitySetting: MeetingPresentationContentLocation, or MeetingMetadataLocation

Office Communications Server Audio/Video Conferencing service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change any of the following:

  • Certificate for this server.

  • The following A/V Conferencing Server Properties on the General tab: IP address or SIP listening port

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

  • MSFT_SIPAVMCUSetting: ListeningIPAddress or SIPListeningPort

Office Communications Server Archiving service

After moving the Archiving database, first start the MSSQLServer service, and then start the Archiving service.

Restart the service after using the MMC to change the Archiving Days Logged setting on the Archiving Server Properties page.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPLogServiceSetting: ConcurrentThreads, ArchivingDBPath, DaysOfArchiving, PurgeTime, LogFilePath, or MaxLogFileSize

Office Communications Server Mediation service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change any of the following:

  • General tab: Communications Server listening IP address or Gateway listening IP address.

  • Next Hop Connections tab: FQDN or Port under Office Communications Server next hop, or IP address or Port under PSTN gateway next hop.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPMediationServerConfigSetting: GatewayListeningAddress, GatewayListeningPort, GatewayNextHopAddress, GatewayNextHopPort, ProxyListeningAddress, ProxyListeningPort, ProxyNextHopFQDN, or ProxyNextHopPort

Office Communications Server Address Book service

No stop or restart requirements.

Office Communications Server Address Book Web Query service

No stop or restart requirements.

Office Communications Server Access Edge service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change any of the following:

  • Certificate for this server.

  • Any settings on the Edge Interfaces tab on the Edge Server.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

  • MSFT_SIPEdgeServerListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPMediaRelaySetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationExternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationInternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting

Office Communications Server Web Conferencing Edge service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change any of the following settings:

  • Certificate for this server.

  • Any settings on the Edge Interfaces tab on the Edge Server.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

  • MSFT_SIPEdgeServerListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPMediaRelaySetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationExternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationInternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting

Office Communications Server Audio/Video Edge service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change any settings on the Edge Interfaces tab on the Edge Server.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPEdgeServerListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPMediaRelaySetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationExternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationInternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting

Office Communications Server Audio/Video Authentication service

Restart the service after using the MMC to change any of the following settings:

  • Certificate for A/V authentication.

  • Any settings on the Edge Interfaces tab on the Edge Server.

Restart the service after changing the following WMI settings:

  • MSFT_SIPRoutingSetting: DefaultPort, TLSCertIssuer, or TLSCertSN

  • MSFT_SIPEdgeServerListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPMediaRelaySetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationExternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting

  • MSFT_SIPFederationInternalEdgeListeningAddressSetting
