The Business Data Import and Export wizard in Business Contact Manager: Select the type of file or folder to import

You can import data from the following file types into Business Contact Manager for Outlook:

Business Contact Manager data (.bcm)

Use this type to move your records and communication history items in Business Contact Manager for Outlook from one computer to another.

Set import options for the file.

Business Contact Manager Customizations (.bcmx)

If you are the database owner, you can import user-defined fields added when the records were customized, as well as the data that these customized fields hold. If you are not the database owner, you can import only the data.

Select the file to import.

E-Mail Marketing Service Contacts (.bcm)

Important: Service Closure Notice Microsoft will discontinue the E-mail Marketing Service effective May 1, 2009, but you can continue to use the service until May 1, 2009.

If you have previously created a Business Contacts list with names from the Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager E-Mail Marketing Service in an earlier version of Business Contact Manager for Outlook, you can import them into your current version. Available in the United States only.

Select the file to import.

Comma-separated values (.csv)

To import data in file formats not supported by Business Contact Manager for Outlook, first convert the file to a comma separated values file.

Select the file to import, and then set options.

Access database (.mdb, .accdb)

Import Accounts or Business Contacts from an Microsoft Office Access database.

Select the file to import, and then set options.

Excel* workbook (.xls, xlsx)

Import Accounts or Business Contacts from an Excel* workbook.

See the following notes for formatting suggestions for the Excel* spreadsheet.

Notes: 

  • At least one column in the Excel* spreadsheet should include a column heading such as City.

  • The column heading row must be the first row in the spreadsheet. The values for some of the column heading can be blank. For example, Name; <blank>; Street; City.

  • Do not include any information above the column heading row.

  • Map the column headings to match the labels on Business Contact Manager records. For more information about mapping fields, see Map fields in Business Contact Manager.

*The stand-alone edition of Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager can be used with Excel 2007 or 2003.

Select the file to import, and then set options.

Outlook Contacts folder

If you have been using your Outlook Contacts folder to store your Business Contacts, this is the easiest way to copy your contact information in bulk into Business Contact Manager for Outlook. Attachments and any comments over 4,000 characters (about a page in length) are not imported. For more information, see Copy or move Outlook Contacts into Business Contact Manager.

Select the Outlook Contacts folder to import, and then set options.

Microsoft Sales Leads (.bcm)

Use this type to import purchased or previous versions of lists of sales leads into Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

Select the file to import, and then set options.

ACT! (.dbf, .pad)

If you have the ACT! application installed, you can import its Contacts, Groups, notes, history, activities, and opportunities.

Note: ACT! versions include ACT! 2007/9, ACT! 2006/8, ACT! 2005/7, ACT! 2003/6, ACT! 2000/5, ACT! 4. Download and install Service Pack 1 for Office 2007 which includes support for importing business data from ACT! 2007/9 and improved support for ACT! 2006/8. The stand-alone edition of Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager includes this support.

Open the Business Contact Manager Data Conversion Tool, and use it to convert the ACT! data.

Note: The English language version of Business Contact Manager for Outlook can only convert ACT! data created by using a United States version of ACT!

QuickBooks (.iif)

Import Contacts, Customers, Employees, Products, and Vendors from QuickBooks into Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

Open the Business Contact Manager Data Conversion Tool, and use it to convert the QuickBooks data.
