Set up email on Windows Mobile 6.5

You can set up Exchange ActiveSync email on Windows Mobile 6.5. When you set up an Exchange account on your device, you'll be able to access and synchronize your email, calendar, and contacts. If you only want to use email, you can set up POP or IMAP email on Windows Mobile 6.5.

Set up Exchange ActiveSync email on Windows Mobile 6.5

  1. Tap Start > Messaging > Setup E-mail.

  2. Enter your email address and password, and then tap Next.

  3. Make sure the check box Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet is selected, and then tap Next.

  4. Your mobile phone will try to get settings from the Internet automatically. If this fails, tap Next. Otherwise go to step 8.

  5. For Your e-mail provider, select Exchange server, and then tap Next twice.

  6. Enter your email address (for example, tony@contoso.com), and then tap Next.

  7. Tap in the Server box and enter your server name, and then tap Next. If you're connecting to your Office 365 email, use outlook.office365.com for your server name. If you are not using Office 365, see Find your ActiveSync server name later in this article.

  8. Enter your user name and password, and then tap Next. Your user name is your complete email address.

  9. Select the check boxes for the types of items you want to view on your device, and then tap Finish.

  10. Tap OK if Exchange ActiveSync asks you to enforce policies on your phone. Policies let you configure a password on your mobile phone and use a remote device wipe to clear all data from your mobile phone if the phone is lost or stolen.

If your email program isn't able to automatically find your Exchange ActiveSync server name, you may need to look it up.

  • If you're connecting to your Office 365 email, use outlook.office365.com as your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

  • If you're connecting to an Exchange mailbox and aren't using Office 365, or if you aren't sure if you're using Office 365, follow these steps to look up your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

  1. Sign in to your account using Outlook Web App. For help signing in, see Sign in to Outlook on the Web.

  2. If you're connecting to an Exchange mailbox, but aren't using Office 365, your Exchange ActiveSync server name is contained in the address bar in your browser when you are signed in to Outlook on the Web, but without the leading https:// and without the trailing /owa. For example, if the address you use to access Outlook on the Web is https://mail.contoso.com/owa, your Exchange ActiveSync server name is mail.contoso.com.

  3. If you're unable to connect to your mailbox using the information earlier in this section, you can try using the server name value that you can view in Outlook Web App options.

    1. In Outlook Web App, your on the toolbar, click Settings Settings icon > Mail > POP and IMAP.

      Note:  Although you're not setting up a POP3 account, you will use this value to determine your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

    2. Under POP setting, look at the value for Server name.

      If the Server name value is outlook.office365.com, your account is an Office 365 work or school account, and you can use outlook.office365.com as your Exchange server name.

      If the Server name value is not outlook.office365.com, you can try using the server name listed on your options page. For example if the server name is mail.contoso.com, try using mail.contoso.com as your Exchange server name.

If your email program is not able to automatically find your Exchange ActiveSync server name, you may need to look it up.

If you're connecting to your Office 365 email, use partner.outlook.cn as your Exchange ActiveSync server name. The Exchange ActiveSync server name partner.outlook.cn can be used if you are using the latest version of Office 365.

If you're not using Office 365 or if you aren't sure if you are using the latest version of Office 365, follow these steps to look up your Exchange ActiveSync server name. Follow these steps to determine your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

  1. Sign in to your account using Outlook Web App.

  2. In Outlook Web App, on the toolbar, click Settings Settings icon > Mail > POP and IMAP.

    Note:  Although you aren't setting up a POP3 account, you'll use this value to determine your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

  3. Under POP setting, look at the value for Server name.

  4. If the Server name shows partner.outlook.cn, your work or school account is on the latest version of Office 365, and you can use partner.outlook.cn as your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

  5. If the Server name value is in the format podxxxxx.partner.outlook.cn, your work or school account account is not yet on the latest version of Office 365, and you can use m.partner.outlook.cn as your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

  6. If the Server name value includes your organization's name, for example, pop.contoso.cn, then your Exchange ActiveSync server name is contained in address bar in your browser when you are signed in to Outlook on the Web - -but without the leading https:// and without the trailing /owa. For example, if the address you use to access Outlook on the Web is https://mail.contoso.cn/owa, your Exchange ActiveSync server name is mail.contoso.cn.

  1. Tap Start > Messaging > Setup E-mail.

  2. Enter your email address and password, and then tap Next.

  3. Clear the box Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet, and then tap Next.

  4. Select Internet e-mail for Your e-mail provider, and then tap Next.

  5. Enter your name (for example, Tony Smith) and, optionally, change the Account display name, and then tap Next.

  6. Enter the Incoming mail server. If you're connecting to your Office 365 email, the IMAP or POP server name is outlook.office365.com. If you're not using Office 365, see Find your POP or IMAP server name later in this article.

  7. Select the Account type (either POP3 or IMAP4), and then tap Next.

  8. Enter your user name (for example, tony@contoso.com), and then tap Next. Your password should already be entered from step 2.

  9. Enter the name of your Outgoing (SMTP) mail server. If you're connecting to your Office 365 email, the SMTP server name is smtp.office365.com. If you're not using Office 365, see Find your POP or IMAP server name later in this article.

  10. Select the box marked Outgoing server requires authentication and make sure the box marked Use the same user name and password for sending e-mail is selected.

  11. Choose how often you want your mobile phone to check for new messages. If you never want your phone to check for new messages, select Manually.

  12. Tap Finish.

If you're connecting to your Office 365 email, the server name for IMAP and POP is outlook.office365.com and the server name for SMTP is smtp.office365.com.

If you're connecting to your Office 365 email, the server name for IMAP and POP is partner.outlook.cn and the server name for SMTP is smtp.office365.cn. These settings can be used if you are using the latest version of Office 365.

If you're connecting to an Exchange mailbox and not using Office 365, or if you aren't sure if you are using Office 365, do the following to look up your settings.

  1. Sign in to your account using Outlook Web App. For help signing in, see Sign in to Outlook on the Web.

  2. In Outlook on the Web, on the toolbar, click Settings Settings icon > Options > Account > My account > Settings for POP or IMAP access.

  3. The POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP server name and other settings you may need to enter are listed on the Settings for POP or IMAP Access page under POP setting or IMAP setting, and SMTP setting.

What else do I need to know?

  • If your email account is the type that requires registration, you must register it the first time you sign in to Outlook Web App. Connecting to your email account through a mobile phone will fail if you haven't registered your account through Outlook Web App. After you sign in to your account, sign out. Then try to connect using your mobile phone.

  • If you're prompted to create a passcode and don't create one, you won't be able to send and receive email.

  • If you don't accept the policies sent to your mobile phone, you won't be able to access your information on your mobile phone.
