Installation limit reached error when activating Office 2016 for Mac

When you're trying to activate Office 2016 for Mac, you might receive this error:

Installation limit reached

Your account <email address> has been used to activate Office on the maximum number of computers allowed. Visit your account page to manage your settings and then return here to retry activation.

Installation limit reached error message

This error occurs when you've reached the maximum number of activations that Office allows. An Office 365 subscription gives you 5 installs on a PC or Mac. If you purchased Office 2016 for Mac as a single license, you only get a one-time install.

Deactivate an Office 365 install

Office 365 Home or Personal
  1. Deactivate an existing Office 365 install.

  2. Try to activate Office 365 for home again.

Office 365 for business
  1. Deactivate an Office 365 for business install.

  2. Try to activate Office 365 for business again.

Office 2016 for Mac: One-time purchase or HUP install

If you bought a one-time purchase of Office 2016 for Mac or received it through the Home Use Program, you're allowed only one install of Office 2016 for Mac and you can't deactivate it in the same way you may do an Office 365 license. If you need to switch your copy of Office 2016 for Mac to a different computer, you can do so over the phone. Contact Microsoft support.
