Download and install or reinstall Office 365 or Office 2016 on your PC or Mac

Before you begin installing Office make sure your computer meets the system requirements. To install the 64-bit version of Office, see the Step-by-step installation instructions, otherwise follow the three steps below.

Tip: If you bought Office as part of your company's Microsoft Home Use Program benefit, see Install or reinstall Office through the Home Use Program (HUP).

Have an Office product key? Not all versions of Office include a key, but if yours did, be sure to redeem it first at office.com/setup.

Go to www.office.com/signin and sign in with the Microsoft account, or the work or school account you use with Office.

Depending on your browser, click Save, Run, Setup, or Save File from the bottom of your screen.

Mac install:
Open Finder >Downloads. Double-click Microsoft_Office_2016_Installer.pkg.

Step-by-step install or reinstall instructions

The following steps detail how to install Office on your PC (laptop, desktop, or 2-in-1), or a Mac. Depending on your platform, they also include instructions for installing Office in a different language or installing the 64-bit version of Office on a PC. (Office 2016 for Mac only installs a 64-bit version).

Select the tab for your Office product; the steps differ depending if your Office product is part of an Office for home or Office for business plan.

Tip: For Office 365 Home subscribers only: You can install Office on up to 5 PCs or Macs. Share your other four installs with friends or family, or use the same Microsoft account to install Office on your other computers. The steps to install are the same.

For a one-time purchase of Office 2016 such as Office Home & Student, Office Home & Business, or Office Professional: You can install Office on only one computer. However, you may transfer Office 2016 to another computer that belongs to you if you experience a hardware failure or you buy a new computer. Install on a PC (Office for home)

Before you begin: Did you redeem your product key and associate Office with a Microsoft account?

Not every purchase of Office includes a key, but if this is a new copy of Office and you got a key sent to you electronically or it was included in your packaging, you need to redeem it first. (If you've already done this, go to Step 1: Sign in to My Office Account.)

1. Go to https://setup.office.com/ and follow the prompts to sign in (or create a new Microsoft account).

Tip: Your Microsoft account is the combination of an email address and password you use to sign in to services like Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Xbox LIVE, OneDrive, or Windows Phone. If you use any of these services, you already have a Microsoft account. Use this same account when you sign in to Office, or create a new one.

To create a new Microsoft account, on the sign in page select No account? Create one! You can use a phone number, an email account you commonly use, or get a new @outlook.com email address.

2. Enter your product key and follow the rest of the prompts to redeem your product.

Step 1: Sign in to My Office Account to begin installing Office

1. Go to My Office Account at www.office.com/myaccount. If you're not already signed in with the Microsoft account associated with your copy of Office do that now. If you're signed in with a different account, sign out of that and then sign in again with the correct Microsoft account.

Note: You must be signed in with this account to install or reinstall, and to manage your Office software.

If your sign in was unsuccessful try signing in again with the correct account, or see "This is the right place to install and re-install Office" for a list of options, including what to try if you can't remember your Microsoft account.

2. Select Install. (If you have an Office 365 subscription you'll need to select Install > and then on the next page, select Install.)

This will start the installation of the 32-bit version of Office on your PC using the language you selected when you redeemed the product.

To install the 64-bit version or a different language, click the link Language, 32/64-bit, and other install options.

  1. From the Language drop-down list, select the language you want.

    Note: For more information about changing languages if you've already installed Office, see Choose or permanently change the language of your Office installation. If you'd like to install language packs for additional display, help, or proofing tools, see Language Accessory Pack for Office 2016.

  2. From the Version drop-down list, select the version, such as Office - 64-bit. If you're not sure which version is right for you, see Choose between the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office.

    Important: If you already installed the 32-bit version of Office, you'll need to uninstall it before installing the 64-bit version, and vice versa. To uninstall Office, see Uninstall Office from a PC.

  3. Select Install.

Step 2: Install Office

1. Depending on your browser, click Save (in Edge), Run (in Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox).

If you see the User Account Control prompt that says, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Click Yes.

2. Your install is finished when you see the phrase, "You're all set! Office is installed now" and an animation plays to show you where to find Office applications on your computer.

Follow the instructions in the window, for example Click Start > All Apps to see where your apps are, and select Close.

Step 3: Activate Office

1. Start using an Office application right away by opening any app such as Word or Excel.

In most cases, Office is activated once you start an application and after you click Accept agreeing to the License terms.

2. Office might activate automatically. However, if you see the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard, follow the prompts to activate Office.

My Install button is grayed out or isn't working

Install on a Mac

  2. On the My Account page, under the name of your subscription, select Install.

  3. On the next page, under Install information, select Install to begin downloading the installation package.

  4. Once the download has completed, open Finder, go to Downloads, and double-click Microsoft_Office_2016_Installer.pkg (the name might vary slightly).

    Tip: If you see an error that says the Microsoft_Office_2016_Installer.pkg can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, wait 10 seconds and then try double-clicking the installer package again. If you're stuck at the Verifying…. progress bar, close or cancel the progress bar and try again.

  5. On the first installation screen, select Continue to begin the installation process.

  6. Review the software license agreement, and then click Continue.

  7. Select Agree to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.

  8. Choose how you want to install Office and click Continue.

  9. Review the disk space requirements or change your install location, and then click Install.

    Note: If you want to only install specific Office apps and not the entire suite, click the Customize button and uncheck the programs you don't want.

  10. Enter your Mac login password, if prompted, and then click Install Software. (This is the password that you use to log in to your Mac.)

  11. The software begins to install. Click Close when the installation is finished. If Office installation fails, see What to try if you can't install or activate Office 2016 for Mac.

Step 2: Launch an Office for Mac app and start the activation process

  1. Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock to display all of your apps.

  3. The What's New window opens automatically when you launch Word. Click Get Started to start activating. If you need help activating Office, see Activate Office 2016 for Mac. If Office activation fails, see What to try if you can't install or activate Office 2016 for Mac.

Installation notes

Can I install Office 2016 for Mac and Office for Mac 2011 on the same computer?

Yes, you can install and use Office 2016 for Mac and Office for Mac 2011 at the same time. However, we recommend that you uninstall Office for Mac 2011 before you install the new version just to prevent any confusion.

To uninstall Office for Mac 2011, follow the steps in Uninstall Office 2011 for Mac.

How do I pin the Office app icons to the dock?

  1. Go to Finder > Applications and open the Office app you want.

  2. In the Dock, Control+click or right-click the app icon and choose Options > Keep in Dock.

Can I install Office on my iPhone or iPad?

Yes, see Install and set up Office on an iPhone or iPad. You can also set up email on an iOS device (iPhone or iPad).

  1. Sign in with your work or school account at https://portal.office.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx.

    Note: If you're unable to sign in you may be signing in to the wrong Office 365 service, see Where to sign in to Office 365.

    If you don't see Office listed, your plan probably doesn't include Office applications. If you know your plan includes Office, you may not have a license assigned, see What Office 365 product or license do I have? If Office is not listed ask your Office 365 administrator to assign a license to you.

  2. On the Office page, go to the version of Office you want to install. For example, your admin may have given you the option to install either Office 2016 or Office 2013.

    If you have a choice, select which version of Office you want to install, select a language, and then select Install.

    Important: The process that installs Office 2016 also uninstalls all Office 2013 products. See "Stop, you should wait to install Office 2016" error or How do I reinstall Office 2013 after an Office 2016 upgrade.

  3. Select a Language, and accept the default to install 32-bit, or select Advanced and choose 64-bit from the drop-down list. If you're not sure which version to install, see Choose the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office 2016.

    Important: If you currently have the 32-bit version of Office installed on your PC, you'll need to uninstall that version before you can proceed with installing the 64-bit version and vice versa.

  4. Select Install.

  5. Depending on your browser, go to the install pop-up that appears and click Save (in Edge), Run (in Internet Explorer) Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox).

  6. The install begins.
