Number Shapes dialog box (General tab)

Operation

Manually by clicking

Allows you to add numbers to shapes on a page by clicking the shapes with the Pointer tool. Clicking OK opens the Manual Numbering dialog box, which stays open while you click shapes to number them or drag new shapes from a stencil onto the drawing page.

Auto number

Automatically numbers the shapes on a page, from left to right and then top to bottom by default. To change the auto-numbering sequence, click the Advanced tab.

Renumber maintaining sequence

Renumbers the shapes on a page and maintains the existing numbering sequence. By default, renumbering allows duplicates in the sequence. To change the default, click the Advanced tab.

Apply to

All shapes

Numbers all the shapes on a drawing page.

Selected shapes

Numbers only the shapes on the drawing page that you selected before you opened this dialog box.

Continue numbering shapes as dropped on page

Continues to number shapes as you drag them onto the drawing page. After you save the drawing, you can turn off this option by right-clicking the drawing page and then clearing the Number Shapes on Drop check box.

Number assigned

Start with

Specify the whole number with which you want to start numbering the shapes on the page.

Interval

Specify the interval between two shape numbers. You can use a negative value if you want the shape numbers to decrease.

Preceding text

Click the text or number that you want to precede each shape number. For example, click A. to number shapes with A.1, A.2, A.3, and so on.

Preview

Displays the results of your selection for Start with, Interval, and Preceding text.
