Discontinued or changed features in PowerPoint 2013

The following list describes features and functionality from earlier versions of PowerPoint that have been significantly changed or discontinued in desktop PowerPoint 2013.

PowerPoint Viewer

You could view a presentation even if you didn't have desktop PowerPoint installed.

Use PowerPoint Online to view a presentation. It's free!

Save as web page (HTML}

When you couldn't view a PowerPoint file, you could save it as a web page and view it in HTML.

Now, you can add a OneDrive place and use the viewer there. See Save and share a presentation to OneDrive.

Default file formats for video and audio

For video, the default file format was WMV; For audio, the default file format was WMA.

The new default file format for video is H.264; The new default file format for audio is AAC.

Note: Some legacy media file formats will require that you optimize them for compatibility in PowerPoint 2013.

Create custom theme colors

Custom themes were located on the Design tab.

This functionality has been moved to Slide Master View on the View tab. See Create your own theme in PowerPoint.

Hide background graphics

This feature was located on the Design tab.

You can now find this feature in the Format Background task pane, which you can get to from the Design tab.

Play back animations

To play back animations, in the Animation Pane, you clicked Play. The animation started with the animation in the first position in the task pane.

You can still play your animations back by clicking Play on the Animation Pane, except now the animation starts with the current animation that is selected, rather than the one in first position.

Equation Editor

Equation Editor, a formula editor, let you construct math and science equations in a WYSIWYG environment.

It is no longer available in PowerPoint 2013.

Microsoft Clip Organizer and online clip art

You used Clip Organizer to collect and store clip art, photos, animations, videos, and other media for use in your presentations, and you searched for clip art on Office.com.

You can find and insert content from Bing Images and other online sources, such as YouTube, Flickr, and your OneDrive or Facebook page.

When using pictures or clip art from Bing, you're responsible for respecting copyright, and the license filter in Bing can help you choose which images to use.

If you need to see clip art you stored in the Clip Organizer, and you have Office 2010, you can do a custom installation of Office 2010 to reinstall the Clip Organizer component.

Microsoft Office Picture Manager

You used Picture Manager to manage, edit, share, and view your pictures stored on your computer.

This feature is no longer included in Office 2013. It has been replaced by the Windows Photo Gallery.

English Assistance

English Assistance was used to help people for whom English is a second language to write better English text.

Because of low usage, the English Assistance feature and service is no longer available. For more information, please see What happened to English Assistance?

If you try to use the service, you'll get the message "The service could not be searched because you are not connected to the Internet. Please connect and try again." even if you're connected to the Internet.

Korean Language Reference (KOLR)

Korean Language Reference was a research tool that could convert Korean to a romanized word.

Because of low usage, the Korean Language Reference research service is no longer available. This affects the English and Korean versions of PowerPoint.

If you try to use the service, you'll get the message "The service could not be searched because you are not connected to the Internet. Please connect and try again." even if you're connected to the Internet.
