Lesson Plan Layout

Lesson plans can be found in the OneNote notebook included with every Hacking STEM lesson. Each notebook is organized into the following sections: 

1. Lesson Overview

   The lesson overview section includes an introduction to the activity, a lesson plan, and the timeframe. Each lesson plan includes NGSS and ISTE standards covered throughout the lesson plan as well as background information for educators to learn more about the topic. The timeframe maps out the suggested timeframe for implementing the project in the classroom.
   

2. Student Activity

   The Student Activity section helps provide students with a rich understanding of the activity. This sections includes the pages below, as well as others relevant to the specific project.Student introduction to immerse students in the context of the project

   • Instructions for building the tools

   • Student journal to help assess students' prior knowledge while documenting their understanding of lesson content

   • Design loop for engaging students in the engineering design process

   • Group roles that connect the project to actual 21st century careers

   • Vocabulary that addresses the important topics of the lesson

     Note: These materials are guides for educators to use and modify as needed so they can create a personalized lesson plan that fits their learning goals. 
     
     

3. Teacher Resources

   These pages in the Teacher Resources section should provide the educator with a rich understanding of the topic, as well as prepare them to teach the lesson from start to finish and beyond with the possibility for lesson extensions. The section includes:

   • Teacher preparation to offer advice for effective implementation

   • Materials list for all necessary items

   • Printable documents for resources related to the lesson

   • Rubrics to assess student learning

   • Lesson extensions for opportunities to deep dive into related subject matter

     

4. Data Visualization

   The final section of each notebook addresses the data visualization aspect of the lesson plan. Here you'll find the Data-Streamer user guide and the user guide for the project's customized Excel workbook.
