My arrow keys don't move from cell to cell

My arrow keys don't move from cell to cell

Note: This article has done its job, and will be retiring soon. To prevent "Page not found" woes, we're removing links we know about. If you've created links to this page, please remove them, and together we'll keep the web connected.

Cause: Scroll Lock is turned on and causing the arrow keys to scroll the workbook area.

Solution:    Turn off Scroll Lock.

Typically, when a cell is selected in a sheet and you press the arrow keys, the selection moves between individual cells, either up or down, or left or right, depending on the arrow key you press. However, if you press the arrow keys when Scroll Lock is on, you scroll one row up or one row down. Or, you scroll one column to the left or one column to the right. Scroll Lock is a toggling lock key on the keyboard, just like the CAPS LOCK key. Once pressed, Scroll Lock is enabled. To use the arrow keys to move between cells, you must turn Scroll Lock off.

  • Press SHIFT+F14 to toggle the Scroll Lock to the off position.

Note: Depending on the type of keyboard that you are using, the key combination may differ and you might need to use the CONTROL key, the OPTION key, or the COMMAND key instead of the SHIFT key. If you are using a MacBook, you might need to attach a USB keyboard to use the F14 key combination.
