Intelligent IM Filter: File Transfer Filter

Intelligent IM Filter: File Transfer Filter

Use the File Transfer Filter tab to configure support for filtering of files included in instant messages according to file extensions.

Enable file transfer filtering

To filter file transfers during instant messaging (IM) conversations and use the handout feature in the Office Live Meeting 2007 client and multimedia playback features, select the Enable file transfer filtering check box, and then do one of the following:

  • To block hyperlinks containing any file extension, click Block all file extensions. All instant messages that contain file transfer requests are dropped by the server, and the sender's client displays an error message. Furthermore, the handout feature of the Office Live Meeting 2007 client is disabled.

  • To block hyperlinks containing specific file extensions, click Block only file extensions in the list below, and then specify the file extensions to block by typing them in the box. Each file extension must be preceded by a period, and separated from other file extensions by a single space. File extensions in the list can contain all standard characters, but not the wildcard character (*). With this setting, the handout feature of the Office Live Meeting 2007 client is enabled but any file with this extension cannot be uploaded or downloaded. By default, URL filtering is configured to block these file extensions in active hyperlinks.

Important: Filtering of file extensions is limited to standard file names. Filtering may not work with file extensions embedded in other names.

The Intelligent IM Filter increases the amount of CPU resources required to process URLs in a message. This increase in CPU demand also affects the performance of Office Communications Server itself.

File Transfer Filter

The file transfer filter affects instant messaging conversations, conferences, and Live Meetings. For Live Meetings, file transfer filter settings affect both the handout feature in the Office Live Meeting 2007 client and multimedia playback features.

Office Communicator also offers file transfer setting options. This server side filter can be configured in addition to Communicator's file transfer options.

For details, see the Operations section of the Office Communications Server Technical Library.
