Turn on Japanese language features (U.S. version only)
Office for Mac lets you turn on the Japanese language features based on the version ofOffice for Mac that you are using.
You turn on the Japanese language features in Office for Mac 2011 by using the Microsoft Language Register. Then, for each Office application that you want to type Japanese characters in, you can select a Japanese input type.

Close any open Office applications.

In the Finder, open Microsoft Office 2011, select Additional Tools, choose Microsoft Language Register, and then double-click Microsoft Language Register to open the application.

On the Select the language to enable for Microsoft Office pop-up menu, click Japanese, and then click OK.

On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.

Under Personal, click Language & Text, and then click the Input Sources tab.

Select the Kotoeri check box, and then under Kotoeri, select the check boxes for the Japanese scripts that you want.

Select the Show Input menu in menu bar check box, and then close the Language & Text dialog box.

Open the Office application that you want to use Japanese in.

On the right side of the menu bar, click the input menu, which is the flag of the current input type, and then click the Japanese input type that you want.

In Office 2016 for Mac makes things a little easier for selecting a different language.

There is no long an Additional Tools folder or Language Register.

Click File > Preferences > East Asian Languages and then select Japanese.
