Delay the remaining work on a task

Delay the remaining work on a task

Work has started on a task, but you need to interrupt the task and delay the remaining work until a later time. For example, Tom is working on a task, but upper management has a new, high-priority project that Tom needs to work on for the remainder of the week. To accommodate this change of priorities, you can split the task to create a gap between the actual work and remaining work on the task. Then, reschedule the remaining work for a later date.

Note: The elapsed duration will include the delay time and the actual hours already completed.

  1. On the View menu, click Gantt Chart.

  2. In the chart portion of the Gantt Chart view, point to the Gantt bar representing the task.

The pointer changes to a four-pointed arrow Four-sided arrow on Gantt Bar .

  3. Right-click the Gantt bar, and then click Split Task.

The cursor changes to to a split-task cursor Split task cursor .

  4. Click the task bar at the point in time when you want to interrupt the work. This splits the actual and remaining work.

  5. Point to the portion of the Gantt bar representing the remaining work. Drag the remaining work to the date when you want the task to resume.

    Notes:

    • To verify the date that the remaining work is to resume, hover over the the portion of the task bar that represents the remaining work. The date when work will resume appears.

    • You can split a task multiple times.

    • To remove a split on a task, drag a portion of the Gantt bar so that it touches another portion.

    • If your project has tasks that have already been split, but you aren't sure why, your project may have been leveled while allowing splits to occur. To check your leveling options, go to the Tools menu, and then click Level Resources.
