Show or hide the rulers

You can use the horizontal and vertical rulers in Word to align text, graphics, tables, and other elements in your document. The horizontal ruler runs across the top of the document, and the vertical ruler runs along the left edge of the document.

The horizontal ruler appears in draft view, print layout view, and publishing layout view. The vertical ruler appears only in print layout view.

  • To view the ruler, on the View menu, click Ruler.

  • To hide the rulers, on the View menu, clear the check mark next to Ruler.

To show rulers only when you positon your mouse over the rulers, do the following:

  1. On the View menu, clear the check mark next to Ruler.

  2. On the Word menu, click Preferences.

  3. Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, click General, and then select the Autohide rulers check box.
